Biography

Pre-Crisis

Negal was a demonic being shown to rule the Charnel Regions of the nether world. It was shown that the souls of the dead sometimes found their way where they remained restless under Black Negal's rule. By modern day, a man made a pact with people promising to return them to life when they died. However, their souls instead went into Negal's realm where they were tortured and became shadows that haunted the man in the real world. During a dinner party in New York, the haunted man drew the attention of Kent Nelson who decided to investigate the matter as Doctor Fate. Going into the nether world, Fate was accompanied by Inza Nelson as they went before Negal on his throne. Doctor Fate told Negal to stop allowing his shadows of the tormented dead to travel to the living world but the demon refused which nearly resulted in a battle. However, Doctor Fate showcased his power forcing Negal to decide to not press the matter further and agree to a pact with the sorcerer whereby he stopped the dead from going to the land of the living in an effort to keep a balance between the worlds. (More Fun Comics v1 #67)

Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Negal was a demonic being shown to rule the realm of Charn that was a region within Hell. Long ago, Doctor Fate Kent Nelson invaded the realm of Charn and threatened to destroy Negal. Ultimately, the pair came to reach an accord that made peaceful co-existence between them possible. (Countdown to Mystery v1 #2) At some point, he was noted to had been involved with the demoness Hezegath until the end of their relationship. (Countdown to Mystery v1 #7)

Years after his last encounter with Kent Nelson, Negal came across another human wearing the Helmet of Fate. The man was Kent V. Nelson who was the grand-nephew of Kent Nelson, the original Doctor Fate. (Countdown to Mystery v1 #1) On this first encounter, Negal was taken by surprise and he was defeated by the new Doctor Fate. After this, Negal offered Fate a bargain, but as soon as he learned that Kent V. Nelson had simply got lucky on their first match, he decided to call the bargain off, and they become instant enemies. (Countdown to Mystery v1 #2)

Negal tormented Kent V. Nelson and made his life harder with the purpose of breaking his mind and body. At first, Negal killed a woman named Inza Fox, whom Nelson had recently met. (Countdown to Mystery v1 #4)

Negal then dragged Nelson through a hellish dimension, in which he was tormented by undead versions of the original members of the Justice Society of America. (Countdown to Mystery v1 #6) After this, Nelson gave the Helmet of Fate to a medium called Maddy, who tried to use the Helmet, but she was instantly dragged to Negal's dimension, where his assistant Ymp tormented her. Negal's plan was to eliminate the possibility of any mortal wearing the mantle of Doctor Fate and with that purpose in mind, he captured Maddy, Kent V. Nelson, and Inza, gathering them all in his own dimension, and he prepared to exterminate them all. (Countdown to Mystery v1 #7)
