Biography

Masterforce

Overlord (Japanese: オーバーロード, Hepburn: Ōbārōdo) was a high-ranking member of the Destron force engaged in battle with Ginrai and his Cybertron Godmasters on Earth. A double Godmaster himself, he had two engines, Mega (female) and Giga (male). He could transform into a tank and a SR-71 Blackbird jet, or a base. Overlord was incredibly powerful, able to challenge even Super Ginrai.

Overlord begins with the mysterious alien energy-being, Devil Z, who sought to create the ultimate super-robot lifeform. Stealing a selection of Transformer Transtectors – lifeless robot bodies designed to merge with smaller robots – from a sector of space known as the G Nebula, he scattered them across the Earth, intending for them to absorb the planet's energies, known as "Chichokon", in addition to the heavenly "Tenchokon" energy they had acquired from the G Nebula. Alongside the largest of the eight Transtectors brought to the planet, Devil Z slumbered deep within an ocean trench, awaiting the day that his plan could come to fruition, and human souls would bond with the Transtectors, endowing them with "Jinchokon", the power of man, and giving the resultant lifeforms, the Godmasters, the power over the three primal energies of life.

That day came when two human beings, a husband and wife named Giga and Mega, came into Devil Z's service and were both bonded with the largest Transtector (the animated series offers no explanation for how this occurred, but the accompanying manga strongly implies that the couple died at sea and had their bodies recovered and resurrected by Devil Z). The duo now controlled the dual aspects of the Transtector – Giga piloted the "Gigatank", while Mega controlled the "Megajet", which could combine together to form either a defense base or the giant robot known as Overlord.

With Devil Z already having brainwashed BlackZarak, the commander of the evil Decepticons – currently engaged in battling the heroic Autobots in the depths of space – Overlord was branded as a Decepticon, the "Ambassador of Destruction" with Devil Z as the emperor. While Devil Z's other agents, the Decepticon Pretenders and Headmaster Juniors, kept the small Autobot force remaining on Earth occupied, the so-dubbed "Lord Giga" and "Lady Mega" set about locating other Godmasters on Earth, finding the German brothers Buster and Hydra and recruiting them to the Decepticon side. After the two groups of Decepticons were then gathered together under Giga and Mega's command, a race ensued between the Autobots and Decepticons to locate the remaining Godmasters, only for the Autobots to acquire three.

Incensed by this failure, Giga and Mega took matters into their own hands, taking their Transtectors into battle for the first time. Luring the Autobot commander Ginrai into the desert, Giga and Mega confronted him as Overlord and immediately proved their physical superiority by thrashing him so badly that he was near death. Overlord subsequently departed into space, taking control of a weather-monitoring base on the moon in order to rendezvous with the approaching BlackZarak there. Pursued by Ginrai, now merged with the drone Godbomber as the powered-up God Ginrai, Overlord and BlackZarak battled him and the Autobot battleship Grand Maximus; refusing to follow Overlord's instruction to return to Earth, BlackZarak ultimately met defeat and fled back into space.

When Black Zarak returned, Devil Z's plans escalated to the destruction of all human life on Earth, shocking Giga and Mega; where Devil Z had come to fear the power of Jinchokon that dwelled within all human beings, the couple celebrated their humanity. Dissention grew as Devil Z fused with BlackZarak and abandoned the Headmaster Juniors in the ruins of the destroyed Decepticon base, and Buster and Hydra, believing that their inability to defeat Ginrai was the result of human limitations, were transformed into fully robotic beings through Devil Z’s power. Confronting God Ginrai for one final time, Overlord vowed to fight him without weapons, battling him only through the use of his physical strength, through the power of his human flesh. When Devil Z turned on Buster and Hydra for their own failures, however, Overlord attempted to attack him, only to be on the receiving end of the emperor's wrath. Rescued by God Ginrai, Giga and Mega finally turned against Devil Z, but when they aided God Ginrai in combating their former master, they were struck down and forcibly separated from their Transtector, which was brought to life through Devil Z's power. As their Masterbraces vanished from their wrists, Giga and Mega died, regretting that they could not settle their rivalry with Ginrai honorably. With the subsequent destruction of Devil Z at God Ginrai's hands, the now-living Overlord Transtector fled into space with the other Decepticons, and joined with the main Decepticon force in space. Overlord later came to be one of the nine great Decepticon generals under the command of the mysterious insectoid being, Violenjiger.

Overlord was born on Cybertron's second moon 4.2 million years ago, a rare breed known as a "Point One Percenter". After its "first flash" killed the hapless miners who discovered it, his spark was taken by the Functionist Council's authenticator Three-of-Twelve. In the days before the Cybertronian civil war, Overlord was both an avid spectator of Megatron's gladiatorial matches Megatron Origin #2 and a participant in the bouts, even fighting Megatron himself. Megatron would be the only opponent to ever defeat Overlord, and he did so regularly, giving Overlord a pathological fear of defeat. Remembrance Day Under Cold Blue Stars All the same, Overlord still joined Megatron's Decepticon faction upon its founding, though it was not the loftiness of the Decepticon cause that Megatron espoused which enticed him. Rather, it was the chance to have the glorious excess of the gladiator battles move beyond the arena, to encompass entire worlds. To Overlord, the ends didn't matter overly much when the means themselves were this pleasurable. As a result, his tactics developed a reputation as unsound, and his schemes as nothing more than flights of brutal whimsy. Unlike many other powerful Decepticons, he had no interest in command, only in taking his slaughter to the next stage. Megatron was not convinced, however, believing the image of Overlord as simply interested in killing to be a façade, and began searching for a way to exert greater control over him.

Recognizing Overlord's power, Megatron regularly sparred with him, and eventually, three million years ago, selected him to be the fourth candidate for an upgrade process that would transform him into a world-shatteringly powerful superwarrior. Rendered virtually indestructible by an infusion of ununtrium to his endoskeleton, Overlord's first action as a member of the "Warriors Elite" was to smash out of his capsule and kill the scientist who oversaw the process, Rossum. He could not, however, do the same to Megatron: the Decepticon leader had not been foolish, and had, during the upgrade process, had Shockwave equip Overlord with both a killswitch that could deactivate him, and infect him with an Achilles virus that caused a "tactical blindspot" preventing him from figuring out how to harm Megatron. When Soundwave was captured by the Autobots and brought to the New Institute for brainwashing, Overlord saw his chance to free himself from these shackles. While ostensibly attacking the facility to rescue Soundwave, he also captured the cerebroscientist Trepan, and studied the basics of mnemosurgery from him, intending to hack Shockwave's memories and learn how to deactivate his killswitch and the virus. Megatron caught wind of Overlord's scheming before he learned how to interface with others, and had Trepan killed. Remembrance Day Overlord later participated in the Battle for Hell's Point alongside the other members of the Warriors Elite. While embroiled in battle on Caldoon 4, Overlord was called to a teleconference with Megatron, who announced the finalization of his infiltration protocol, and that Overlord would join fellow Warriors Elite Sixshot and Black Shadow in being reclassified as "Phase Sixers", called in to alien worlds to enact the doomsday scenario of the protocol's final phase. Dissatisfied with being declared a weapon that operated at someone else's whim, Overlord contested his appointment, and Megatron gave him two options: do as he was told, or refuse and have Megatron hunt him down. Overlord made his choice quickly, returning to the battle outside and dispatching every Autobot save one—Kup—who he allowed to survive so a message could be sent to Megatron: Overlord had chosen option two. He proceeded to leave Caldoon 4 to plan for Megatron's inevitable coming. For his treason, Overlord found his way onto the infamous list of traitors maintained by the Decepticon Justice Division.

Some time later, Overlord initiated a conflict with the emperor of a star system who was in possession of interstellar travel capabilities and weapons technology that rivaled his own. Finding himself overmatched, Overlord sought and secured the aid of Gorelock's Decepticon battalion, which, at the time, was assigned to Spensifax B. The ensuing battle, according to the estimates of science officer Vivisector, set the technological development of the empire back an estimated 250,000 years.
