The Progenitor Virus is a virus that features in Resident Evil.

History

The Progenitor Virus or Mother Virus was a particular viral strain that existed in the world. Its discovery in the modern age came as a result of folklore legend surrounding the rituals of the African tribe known as the Ndipaya who utilised a plant called the Stairway to Heaven. Ozwell E. Spencer hypothesised the flower used in their rites held great significance and this led to the discovery of the Progenitor virus. From the discovery, Ozwell E. Spencer, James Marcus and Edward Ashford later founded the Umbrella Corporation. Spencers research into it was later succeeded by Dr. Marcus was the one who coined its name. By combining Progenitor with the DNA of a leech, Marcus created the highly deadly T-Virus though after he abused his power he was fired from the position. After Dr. Marcus, Dr. William Birkin took over the research who achieved many outstanding results that included the development of the T-Virus and later was responsible for the more powerful G-Virus. Meanwhile, research on the Mother Virus continued to take place in Umbrella laboratories across the world in the hope that this would yield in the creation of new viral strains.
