Proxima Midnight

She gathered with the other members of the Cull Obsidian onboard Thanos's ship above Titan. It was there that Thanos commanded his Generals to attack Earth whilst he himself went to claim the tribute. Splitting their forces, Proxima Midnight struck against the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. While in pitched battle with the motley crew stand in for Earth's protectors, Midnight managed to incapacitate the group's leader, Spectrum by lancing her with a fatal anti-photon charge, crippling her light form, then proceeding to pummel Cage into the ground with force and fury. Assured of her own victory, Proxima would soon find resistance in the local civilian bystanders who kept chanting the words 'Avengers Assemble', when she made a move towards them in an irate rage she was stopped by a roused Cage who fought her to a standstill. Just as Thanos projected towards her location in Times Square, voicing his disappointment in her failings as Ebony Maw proceeded with his own particular end game Incensed she gets in one last sucker punch On Luke before departing. Finding Atlantis in rubble and Namor devastated, Proxima deduced that Namor did not have the gem in his possession. She made clear her intentions to kill him and destroy Atlantis to Namor, and offered to spare him and his nation in exchange for the location of the gem. Proxima Midnight later attacked Manhattan where she was confronted by the newly formed Mighty Avengers. She was able to defeat their most powerful members including Monica Rambeau and Luke Cage but the civilians came to cheer for their heroes thus giving them inspiration to fight back. This placed her on the defensive and the Mad Titan Thanos was disappointed in Proxima's inability to reduce the city to dust. She was then reassigned elsewhere despite her objections where she vowed that if the heroes survived what Ebony Maw had planned for them then she would get her revenge against them for this defeat. After departing, Maw through his manipulation of Doctor Strange came to unleash the demon Shuma-Gorath on the city and its heroes. (Mighty Avengers v2 #2)

After her fellow Black Order member Black Dwarf failed to break Wakanda, Proxima, Corvus Glaive and Thanos himself departed for Wakanda, defeating its defenders and breaching their city wall. They narrowed down the potential location of the gem to the Necropolis, the secret base of the Illuminati. (New Avengers v3 #11)

Notes

  • Proxima Midnight was created by Jonathan Hickman and Mike Deodato Jr. where she made her first appearance in New Avengers v3 #8 (September, 2013).
  • In an interview on CBR, writer Jonathan Hickman commented, "The cruelest of Thanos’ generals. A predator in every sense of the word, Proxima Midnight is the greatest warrior in Thanos’ army."
  • Editor Tom Brevoort added, "Proxima Midnight is a warrior, is a fighter, is the best actual combatant within not only Thanos’ lieutenants, but within his whole army. She is literally a warrior princess type in that she’s gotten to where she is through physical prowess and physical ability. Design-wise, she had to come from that. She was designed by Jonathan himself, actually, at the 11th hour. She comes very directly from his imagination in terms of her look and her feel. At a glance, you should look at her and know she’s something of an ass-kicker and will do so bare handedly or with weapon in hand."
  • On her weapon, Brevoort further said, "It certainly seems to be a crazy spear gizmo, but it’s comprised of the same metal and the same substance that her arm is either sheathed in or made out of,” said Brevoort. “You can tell that there’s more to it, perhaps, than seems to be apparent on the surface."
