History
The Q Continuum were a race of higher ordered beings that inhabited the universe. Their origins were unknown though it was claimed that they had always existed. (VOY: The Q and the Grey)
The self-destructive actions of the Q named Quinn were said to had resulted in a misunderstanding that triggered a century-long war between the Vulcans and Romulans. (VOY: Death Wish)
On Earth, one of their number acted on their own where he intervened and influenced Human affairs since the time of Isaac Newton. (VOY: Death Wish) However, official first contact with the Q Continuum and the United Federation of Planets occurred in 2364 when the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D met Q. (TNG: Encounter at Farpoint)
Overview
In appearance, the members of the Q Continuum could vary their form to match the views of any lower life form. A Q were part of a super-race that were able to change matter to energy or suspend time whilst existing in a continuum of limitless dimensions of the galaxy. As a result, they were a unique race that possessed many extraordinary god-like abilities. They have an almost omnipotent ability to perceive and know events in the past, present, and future. They are invulnerable and immortal except when faced with weapons designed by others of their kind: in sufficient numbers, Q can strip other Q of their powers and make them mortal or make them any lifeform they wish.
They had unlimited control over space, matter and time. (VOY: Q2) Q had the ability of imparting their powers onto other species. (TNG: Hide and Q)
It is suggested through their appearances on the various series of Star Trek that the Q have evolved since the Big Bang to their current state, and that possibly they were like humans very early on.
One member of the Q once referred to a "New Era" among the Continuum, during which an important change occurred in the species. No further details were given. The Continuum is on a separate plane of existence and thus not subject to linear time as normal space is. It has been suggested by Quinn that when the Q gave up their physicality and achieved their godlike powers, they also gave up any chance of growth or evolution, thus leading to stagnation (since change was unnecessary).
They usually appear as human simply because they can assume any form they wish, and when interacting with humans they usually appear as one of them to make the humans feel more comfortable.

Other
- In Star Trek: The Q Conflict v1 (2019), the Q Continuum appeared within the comic mini-series story arc. It was said that every few thousand eons that they faced challenge from the more advanced trying to place themselves on the same level as the Continuum. Thus, the Q decided to remove this notion from them by instigating a higher plane war that lasted for several hundred years and manifested in the lower planes as a regular series of random supernovae. Among the opponents that challenged the Q Continuum included the Squire of Gothos, the Metrons and the Organians.
