Biography
Ryu (Japanese: リュウ, Hepburn: Ryū) was a male human who as a young child awas orphaned and left with no memories of his parents. He came to be found and adopted by a man named Gouken who raised Ryu in his secluded dojo and trained Ryu in the ways of his martial arts. Ryu used to watch Gouken, Goutetsu and Akuma train with each other. Sometime afterwards, Gouken would later train his best friend's spoiled son, Ken Masters. Ken served not only as a sparring partner, but also gave Ryu a friend in the form of a boy his own age. Ryu looked up to Gouken as a father figure, and regards Ken as his best friend and surrogate brother, a relationship which continued into their adult years. When Ryu turned 23 years old, Gouken believed that Ryu was ready to travel the world in order to test and hone his martial skills against the best fighters from around the world. After Ryu and Ken's training was complete, Ken casually asked Ryu which of the two will be the most famous martial artist first. While Ken went to USA, Ryu travels to Thailand alone, in order to face Sagat who held the title of Emperor of Muay Thai and was said to be the strongest martial artist.
After arriving in Thailand, Ryu went about finding a way of challenging Sagat to a fight and went about creating a plan whereby his opponent could not refuse. By defeating many Muay Thai fighters, he believed it would eventually reach Sagat's ears. If successful, Sagat would show himself in order to defend Muay Thai's honor. Ryu defeated 20 Muay Thai users, and yelled at the fighters how allowing a stranger to tarnish Muay Thai's reputation is an embarrassment, Sagat heard Ryu and his fighting spirit burned. He told Ryu that he would show him real Muay Thai, and the two would clash. However, Ryu, defeated Sagat with a nearly-fatal Shoryuken that not only knocks Sagat unconscious, but also left a great scar. After regaining consciousness, Sagat swore to get revenge against Ryu.
Ryu left Sagat behind and spends the next few months training travelling to various location pondering the question "What is the meaning of anything in life?". By defeating Sagat who was once declared to be the strongest man in the world, that would make Ryu the strongest which means that he fulfilled his life’s greatest purpose. Ryu refused to believe he achieved his goal so soon and continued his training, learning new moves in the process. He encountered and fought Akuma on a secluded island known as Gokuentou, and wins; however, Akuma was only testing him, and senses that Ryu has the same powers as he does. He proceeds to tell Ryu about the Satsui no Hado - a power that consumes the practitioners of their shared fighting style, driving them to win even when it meant killing the opponent. Akuma then uses his fist to smash the island with a single punch, leaving Ryu stranded. Sometime after escaping the island, Ryu is found by Sagat, who is out for a grudge match. Ryu protests that Sagat had not fully recovered from their last bout, but Sagat persisted. Ryu lets Sagat win rather than do any further damage, and Sagat leaves. Only later, upon reflection, does Sagat realize that Ryu held back, vowing to fight him again. At some point, Ken finds Ryu. He asks Ken what it meant to be a true fighter, he wonders if he should use the same fist he used to defeat Sagat or the one Akuma uses to murder people. Ken sees that Ryu's gone back to his usual bad habit of overthinking things and fights him as an attempt to wake him up. After defeating Ryu, Ken realizes he has been deeply troubled since his last victory over Sagat. He reminded Ryu to keep fighting in order to find the answer and gives him his red hairband and that whenever he feels lost, he should use it as a reminder of their fight and to keep fighting to find the answer. Ryu happily takes the headband and they both go their separate ways. Soon thereafter, a fan of his, named Sakura, comes up and expresses her desire to train under him. Ryu replies that he himself still has much to learn, but allows Sakura to take a picture of him for now.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Ryu was depicted as a tall and heavily muscled Japanese man with a rugged but disciplined presence. His most iconic look featured a white karate gi, frayed at the edges from years of travel and combat, tied with a black belt that symbolized his mastery. He wore red gloves and a red headband, the latter a gift from Ken, which became a distinctive emblem of his character. His dark hair was usually short and unkempt, and his stern expression reflected his intense focus.
In personality, Ryu was defined by his stoicism, humility, and unwavering dedication to the martial path. He rarely displayed arrogance, instead treating opponents with respect and valuing the lessons learned from every battle. His life was one of self-imposed solitude, rejecting wealth, fame, or comfort in order to remain fully committed to training. Though serious, he was not without warmth, as his friendships with Ken, Chun-Li, and others revealed a compassionate side that surfaced beyond combat. His greatest internal conflict centered on the Satsui no Hado, as he struggled to resist its corrupting influence while still striving to reach the limits of his potential. This balance between light and darkness defined his journey as a martial artist and as a man.
After learning of the Satsui no Hado, he came to believe that this dark power was responsible for his victory over Sagat. This led to Ryu to reject this ki as he knew he could not control its dark power and was unwilling to kill anyone or risk losing his compassion and humanity.
If he succumbed to the Satsui no Hado, he became Evil Ryu (殺意の波動に目覚めたリュウ Satsui no Hadō ni Mezameta Ryū?, "Ryu with the Surge of Killing Intent Awakened") and was also known as the Satsui Ryu (殺意リュウ Satsui Ryū?, lit. Killing Intent Ryu). Evil Ryu was shown to be cold and conceited where he was obsessed with fighting in order to prove he was the strongest. He was a more demonic and murderous-driven being where he had purged all traces of his former honorable self and showed sociopathic traits. He enjoys absolute power, and lacks any sort of empathy or respect, and despises what he perceives as weakness from all of humanity, such as love, family, justice and vengeance. He is also extremely brutal towards other fighters in general, especially to those that oppose him, and tends to mock them with a sadistic sense of humor. Evil Ryu also refers to himself as heartless and nothing more but a demon and will seek out and murder any opponent in a fight, regardless of their age and condition. He displays a very dangerous bloodlust, even borderline sadism and ritualistic belligerence that almost borders on cannibalism.
Powers and abilities
Ryu was a human, though his training in Ansatsuken elevated him to a level far beyond ordinary fighters. As such, he possessed immense physical strength, speed, and endurance, capable of standing toe-to-toe with world-class martial artists and even superhumanly empowered opponents. His mastery of Ansatsuken techniques allowed him to channel ki energy into devastating attacks such as the Hadouken, Shoryuken, and Tatsumaki Senpukyaku. These techniques demonstrated not only raw power but also the spiritual control required to harness inner energy. His endurance was legendary, surviving brutal battles and continuing to rise even after sustaining crippling damage. Though vulnerable to the temptation of the Satsui no Hado, his strength was tempered by discipline, making him one of the most formidable and respected warriors in the world.
He knew a variety of techniques that included the:
- Reppuu Jinrai Shou (烈風迅雷掌 Reppū Jinrai Shō?, "Gale Swift Thunder Palm") :
- Shoryuken (昇龍拳 Shōryūken?, "Rising Dragon Fist") :
- Hado Shoryuken (波動・昇龍拳, Hadō Shōryūken, "Surge Rising Dragon Fist") :
- Tatsumaki (竜巻? "Tornado") :
- Shinku Tatsumaki Senpukyaku (真空竜巻旋風脚, Shinkū Tatsumaki Senpūkyaku, "Vacuum/True Void Tornado Whirlwind Kick") :
- Hadoken (波動拳 Hadōken?, "Surge Fist" or "Wave Motion Fist") :
- Metsu Hadoken (滅・波動拳 Metsu Hadōken?, "Perish Surge Fist") :
- Shinku Hadoken (真空波動拳 Shinkū Hadōken?, "Vacuum/True Void Surge Fist") :
- Shakunetsu Hadoken (灼熱波動拳 Shakunetsu Hadōken?, "Scorching Heat Surge Fist") :
Ryu was able to also tap into a power known as the Satsui no Hado (殺意の波動 Satsui no Hadō?, "Surge of Murderous Intent") that was a form of ki rooted in the darker aspects of human instinct.
The Satsui no Hado would develop sentience and came to manifest as its own entirely separate, physical entity, naming itself Kagenaru Mono (影ナル者 Kagenaru Mono?, "The Shadowed One"). Also known as Kage (影 Kage?, "Shadow", pronounced as "KA-gé"), he was very similar to Ryu in appearance as both seeming to stand at the same height, although Kage appears to have a somewhat higher degree of musculature as well as a considerably darker skin-tone. In addition to this, Kage's irises are red and luminescent whilst his sclerae are jet black and the eyes are permanently encircled by a dark ring.

- Taliesin Jaffe noted, "The whole idea of Ryu in the first place is that he's a Lancelot character, and I was prepared for the corruption of that character from the very beginning. We knew we were gonna go there, and actually part of the first audition for Ryu was, I had a couple lines I wanted them to read specifically in that darker vein."
