Biography

Origin

Sauron in X-Men v1 #61.

Karl Lykos was a male human who as a young boy travelled with his father on an expedition to Tierra del Fuego near the Antarctic Circle. Along with them on the journey was a wealthy client and physician named Dr. Anderssen who was on the journey his daughter Tanya Andersson where she was about the same age as the young Karl. During the journey, Tanya became lost with Karl finding her in a cave where they were attacked by gigantic pterodactyls from the Savage Land a form of flying reptile from the age of dinosaurs. Karl drove the pteranodons off with his walking stick, but not before he was severely bitten. Traumatized by their experience, neither Karl nor Tanya remembered the pteranodons, and Dr. Anderssen used his medical skills to save Karl's life. During his recovery, the young Lykos discovered that he could now drain the life-force of other organisms through a touch. His first unintentional victim was his dog Jager, whom he drained of energy simply by touching him. He found himself repeatedly tempted to use his new power, feeling that he needed to drain life energy from other humans or animals to survive.Karl kept his condition a secret, even after he found himself forced to drain energy from other human beings. However, he killed none of them, merely leaving them temporarily weakened. When Karl's father died, Mr. Anderssen took Karl into his home in thanks for rescuing Tanya. As the years passed, Karl and Tanya fell in love, but Tanya's wealthy father would not allow her to date Karl because of his lack of wealth. In an effort to win Mr. Anderssen's support, Karl went to medical school and became a physician, geneticist, and hypnotherapist. He treated patients through hypnosis, but secretly robbed them of energy at the same time as his need for life energy increased by the time he became an adult. As a result, he constructed devices through which he could drain his patients' life energies into himself. (X-Men v1 #60)

During his studies to become a doctor, Lykos was noted to had met Professor Charles Xavier where he came to be a colleague and consultant on Mutant biology. Professor Xavier had wanted aid in finding Mutants at an early age in their lives in order to train them in their use of their powers. However, Lykos secretly hoped that his work with Xavier would lead him to genuine mutants to study and that their life-energy would inevitably be more powerful than that of normal humans. After discovering Lykos was in his terms a 'non-mutant variant', Xavier ultimately broke off their consultations. Though Xavier learnt of Lykos' need and ability to siphon the life energy of others into himself, he never told his protégés the X-Men about this discovery. (X-Men v1 #60)

Whilst treating an injured Havok, Lykos drained his energies (as he had to others through the years using a machine he invented). However, the mutant energies affected Lykos differently, and he transformed into a humanoid pterodactyl-like creature. His personality became twisted and altered, and he renamed himself Sauron (after the J.R.R. Tolkien villain). In addition to the sharp claws and flight ability granted by his new form, Sauron also had a powerful ability to hypnotize. (X-Men v1 #60)

Sauron battled the X-Men on several occasions since his first transformation, despite Lykos' attempts to avoid mutant life energy after each drain's energy was used up. Lykos eventually made his way into the Savage Land. However, some years later, Lykos and Tanya Andersson were captured by the Toad. The Toad force-fed all of Tanya's life energy to Lykos, which somehow made Sauron's transformation permanent. Sauron spent some time with the Toad's incarnation of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, before heading to live in the Savage Land. More recently, he was drafted into the new Weapon X program.

Personality and attributes

In his youth, he came to save the life Tanya Anderssen leading to her father Herr Anderssen becoming indebted to Karl Lykos. (X-Men v1 #60)

Whilst growing up, he came to fall in love with Tanya Anderssen who grew to be a beautiful young blonde haired woman. However, her father wanted Tanya to marry a person with wealth leading to Lykos seeking out wealth in order to claim her hand. Since that time, they had little contact but exchanged letters with Karl stating that she loved him in turn. He said that he would have done anything in order to make her part of his life. (X-Men v1 #60)

Powers and abilities

Karl Lykos came to labour in medical school to become a successful doctor. It was said that he was a miracle worker and a talented hypnotist. (X-Men v1 #60)

After being attacked by a Pteranodon, Lykos was bitten by the flying dinosaur which left him injured and he had to be treated by a doctor. In the aftermath though, he came to discover that he gained abilities with this first manifesting in him being able to drain the life from living beings to empower himself. As he grew older, his need for human energy came to grow forcing him to steal it from others in order to keep himself alive. (X-Men v1 #60)

To sate his hunger for life energy, Karl Lykos came to use an electronic apparatus to steal it from his patient the Mutant Havok. However, this had an adverse effect as it mutated his body transforming him into a human/Pteranadon. His body gained muscles, fierce talons and he grew leathery wings underneath his arms. (X-Men v1 #60)

He was skilled enough to construct an electronic apparatus that he could use to drain life energy from his patients. (X-Men v1 #60)
