History

Scouters (Japanese: スカウター, Hepburn: Sukautā) were scanners that were invented by the Tuffles of Planet Plant that was capable of registering the power level of a person.

After the Tuffles were wiped out by the Saiyans, the Saiyans adopted the use of the scouter. After joining with Frieza, the Saiyans shared the technology, and thus all the Frieza Force came to wear scouters. Originally, it was a device for the purpose of guarding against enemies and beasts, but Gichamu, a highly skilled engineer in Frieza's army, laid eyes on it and made modifications for concrete battle power numbers and telecommunications abilities, and soldiers began making use of it to carry out offensives.

It should be noted that the members of the Ginyu Force and Cooler's Armored Squadron, as well as the warriors serving directly under King Cold, all wore scouters that were more advanced than the "basic" scouter and were smoother in design.

Overview

In appearance, a Scouter consisted of an earpiece and a lens over one eye (the lenses came in three main colors: red, green, and blue). Its purpose was to "scout" an enemy and determine their battle power.

People capable of generating powerful bursts of energy were capable of overwhelming a scouter and cause it to explode.

Scouters also serve the purpose of gathering information, and for interstellar communication. It was shown that they also had the ability to record audio. Scouters can also tell the location of someone, as demonstrated when members of the Frieza Force use scouters to hunt down enemies.

Some members of Frieza's army, that are too weak to use ki blasts, wear an Arm Cannon that has a wire that connects to their scouter.
