Popular Japanese manga which was adapted into a pair of even more popular animated series (Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z). Inspired by the Chinese folklore Xi You Ji (translated into Journey to the West). It spun off 16 animated films, three television specials, a direct-to-video movie, video games, and a sequel series, Dragon Ball GT. Dragon Ball Z originally aired in American syndication from 1996-1997, and was dropped for a year before Cartoon Network picked it up and began dubbing new episodes, airing them from 1999 to 2003. Dragon Ball began airing on Cartoon Network in 2001. (A previous dub had been released direct to video.) Dragon Ball GT began airing in 2003. Currently, a re-dub of the episodes used in the syndicated run is being released.
Dragon Ball is in the same universe as another series from creator Akira Toriyama, Doctor Slump.
