History

Origin

Slabside Island Maximum Security Penitentiary was a highly advanced prison that was built on Earth by the modern age. It was built as the toughest lock-down prison in America that was meant to be better than even Belle Reve with it initially based off New Jersey. (Green Lantern v3 #51)

At some point, Icicle Junior had been and been detained at the Slab where heat lamps were used to dampen his powers to generate ice. Around this time, Johnny Sorrow emerged where he used his powers to enter into the prison where he used his powers to deal with the guards as he freed Icicle. (Secret Origins of Super-Villains 80-Page Giant v1 #1) Wildcat visited the Slab to speak to Killer Wasp after he mistakenly believed the boy to had been his long lost son Jake. (JSA v1 #21)

The Daily Star journalist Arthur Harris was the third reporter to visit the Slab since its re-establishment in Antarctica. During the visit, the prison came under attack by Brother Blood and his Church of Blood who took it over. From there, the cult intended to release a signal that would activate a million sleeper agents that were tasked with kidnapping infants for the church. The Outsiders arrived on the scene to stop them and in the confusion many of the prisoners at the Slab escaped in the resultant destruction of the prison. (Outsiders v3 #6)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Overview

It was also known as The Slab as it was held that the only way to escape it was feet first. (Green Lantern v3 #51) It was held as the most highly advanced prison on Earth. The Slab held just under 1,600 felons with some of the world’s most dangerous and deadliest criminals being incarcerated in the facility. Prisoners were outfitted with dampener collars in order to prevent the use of their powers. The prison was thus placed in a wasteland in order to keep the criminals inside contained for the planet’s safety. Thus, the penitentiary was said to contain the darkest aspects of the human psyche and condition. (Outsiders v3 #6)

The Slab was said to possess contingencies and defensive measures in order to respond to external attacks. (Outsiders v3 #6)
