Biography

Yurrd the Unknown was an ancient cosmic being who stood as a member of the Horsemen of Apokolips. (52 v1 #44)

It was said that the hunger-lord rode before the rest of his kin and had been operating on Earth. (52 v1 #38)

Sobek was first believed to be a bio-engineered humanoid Nile crocodile, created in Doctor Sivana's lab. He remained trapped within the underground laboratory at Doctor Sivana's residence. This was until he one day broke free and escaped the mansion after the Sivana Family returned to it. At the time, the Sivana Family had asked Black Adam to find the missing Doctor Sivana when the crocodile-like being broke into the dining room and escaped into the garden. At the time, he encountered Osiris where he claimed to been a Nile crocodile Sivana got from the Nile and experimented on before he escaped from his cage in Sivana's lab. Seemingly benign, he befriended Osiris who decided to have the beast-like being accompany the Black Marvel Family and even gave him a name. (52 v1 #26) He was named Sobek after the Egyptian crocodile-headed god after he claimed that he did not have a name. From then on, Sobek puts on a facade of cowardice and timidness to fool everyone around him. Afterwards, Osiris suffered despondency after accidentally killing Persuader leading him to think his powers were evil and werw causing the disasters in Kahndaq. This led to Sobek convincing him to give up his powers and upon becoming human the humanoid crocodile Sobek quickly devoured him whilst claiming he was not so hungry anymore. (52 v1 #43)

Soon after, Sobek was revealed to be Yurrd the Unknown, one of the Four Horsemen of Apokolips where he represents famine. Yurrd has been created along with Roggra, Zorrm, and Azraeuz as a group of bioengineered monstrosities sent to attack the Black Marvel Family, he causes crops to die so even the magic of Isis cannot restore them. Yurrd was the first to be sent out as a sleeper agent until the time looked right to strike. Black Adam and Isis are lured to the Horsemen when Black Adam feels Osiris's power returning to him. He tells Black Adam that Osiris was too stringy. In the ensuing battle, Yurrd is the first of the Horsemen to be killed, his jaws ripped apart by Black Adam. The other ones are killed by Adam except for Death. (52 v1 #44) The last of the Horsemen managed to escape to the nearby nation of Bialya. Adam kills millions of people, before finding, torturing, then killing Death to find out who created the Horsemen. (52 v1 #45)

52 Aftermath

However, the destruction of Sobek's body had not destroyed the essence of Yurrd. In time, Yurrd resurfaced in Bialya, possessing the body of Taylor Reese, a Wayne Enterprises employee overseeing refugee operations in Bialya and selling food on the black market to a local warlord. After killing Reese's employees, he was confronted by Bruce Wayne, and induced hunger in the human industrialist, but Wayne was able to control himself. After Superman arrived, Yurrd escaped when he induced several of Reese's guards with hunger, which forced Superman and Wayne to dispatch the guards. (52 Aftermath: The Four Horsemen v1 #1) Escaping, he met up with his fellow Horseman Azraeuz, who raised the dead of Bialya to serve as a work force to serve their needs. After making a mound of earth and corpses, Yurrd and the other Horsemen had the dead build them bodies able to house their essences. The Justice League of America attempted to destroy them by throwing a chunk of ice at the mound, but this ignited the firepit and resurrected the Four Horsemen. (52 Aftermath: The Four Horsemen v1 #3) Now in the form of a bipedal hyena with cybernetic parts, Yurrd attacked Superman. However, even while infected by Zorrm's pestilence, Superman managed to hold his own against Yurrd, breaking the beast's nose at one point. (52 Aftermath: The Four Horsemen v1 #4) Finally, Superman took Yurrd into orbit and back again, defeating him. (52 Aftermath: The Four Horsemen v1 #5) Denied a means to act, Yurrd abandoned his body and tried to possess Batman. However, Yurrd could not control Batman, for his desire for vengeance was greater than Yurrd's hunger was. Veronica Cale, who had overseen the Four Horsemens' rebirth, swallowed a crystal intended to house their spirits, and removed Yurrd's essence from Batman, trapping him and the Horsemen for the time being. (52 Aftermath: The Four Horsemen v1 #6)

Blackest Night

During the [Blackest Night]], Sobek's original crocodile body was reanimated as a member of the Black Lantern Corps. He located Osiris who had similarly been transformed into a Black Lantern though was one wit full control over his mind due to Black Adam mystically restoring his corpse with the two battling one another. Osiris destroyed Sobek and himself by calling out "Black Adam!", resulting in the magical lightning hitting them both and destroying their rings' connections to them. (The Power of Shazam! v1 #48)

Later on, a resurrected Osiris went to Arkham Asylum and came to believes that Killer Croc was Sobek during a jailbreak causing him to brutally attack Waylon. (Teen Titans v2 #28)
