Biography

Origin

Dr. Steven Lang was a male human who was opposed to Mutants and sought to eliminate the threat posed by them. He was noted to had been friends with Michael Rossi in the past. At some point, he initiated a project designed with stopping Mutants that took six years of his life and cost a billion dollars in illegal appropriations. Among the acts made during this time was the kidnapping of Mutants that he intended to study. This led to the creation of Project Armageddon that operated in secret over the years. (X-Men v1 #96)

The Mk III Sentinels were unfortunately inferior to the previous ones because Lang worked with only incomplete notes from the Trasks and because the secret of his activities stopped him from hiring enough experts. He also made them less intelligent than the previous Sentinels to stop any possible rebellion. Notably, Lang built Sentinels that looked like the original X-Men, which became known as the X-Sentinels. The X-Sentinels confused the newer X-Men to such a degree that they were ending up thrashed, but then Wolverine discovered that these impostors were not human and ripped up the Jean Grey lookalike, exposing their true nature. (X-Men v1 #100)

The memory engrams of Lang were later merged with those of a Master Mold that had survived his encounter with the X-Men. Holding Lang's persona, the machine created a partner for itself named Conscience to help him in his endeavours in getting revenge against the Mutants. Similarly animated through Lang's engrams, the two worked in secret to eliminate the Mutant race where they came to brainwash Moira MacTaggert to aid them. Operating from the Scottish highlands, the Sentinel units were supported by a horde of servitors where they helped spearhead the creation of the Retribution Virus that was made to solely target and kill Mutants. (Marvel Comics Presents v1 #21)

Overview

Personality and attributes

Lang's memories were later used to animate the mind of a Master Mold Sentinel which in turn created another machine based on them who was named Conscience. (Marvel Comics Presents v1 #21)

Lang held the view that Mutants were a danger and that this would lead to the ultimate conflict between Homo sapiens and Homo superior. He believed that Bolivar Trask knew of the threat posed by Mutants and felt that Homo Superior had been responsible for both his death along with the demise of his son Larry Trask. As such, he was perfectly willing to illegally capture Mutant specimens for in-depth examination as he believed it would allow mankind to at last know their true enemy. (X-Men v1 #96)

Powers and abilities

As the Master Mold, he was tended to by bald-headed bug-eyed artificial living beings called Servitors who were said to be silent and soulless creatures. These beings were said to be impervious to pain and that the only way to stop them were to destroy them entirely. Typically, they served as workers but could be outfitted with weapons and sent into the field to serve as soldiers. Though not skilled fighters, their sheer numbers were capable of overwhelming lone enemies. (Marvel Comics Presents v1 #20)

Through Moira MacTaggert, Lang was able to deploy a specially engineered lethal and infectious disease called the Retribution Virus which solely killed Mutants. (Marvel Comics Presents v1 #20)
