History

Sunnydale was a suburban town that existed in the United States of America. In ancient times, a mystical scythe was used at the site of the Hellmouth where it killed the last pure demon that walked on the Earth. Afterwards, the scythe was hidden with the last of its guardians waiting at a temple where he remain undisturbed for centuries. (Episode: End of Days) It was known that the Chumash tribe of Native Americans lived in the region. (Episode: Pangs) As in general California history, these friars can safely be assumed to have been Spanish Franciscans, who arrived in California in the late 18th century. (Episode: Empty Places) In 1812, an earthquake struck the Sunnydale region causing a large cave-in that caused the loss of the entire Sunnydale Mission whose existence came to be forgotten. (Episode: Pangs)

Richard Wilkins made a pact with demons where he founded a town atop the Hellmouth with the goal to feed its inhabitants to them. In exchange, he was promised immortality by becoming a pure demon himself with Wilkins becoming the Mayor of the newly formed town of Sunnydale. (Episode: Enemies)

In the 1930s, there was at least one more major earthquake in Sunnydale. This caused a cave-in that swallowed up the Master and his lair, as well as the Satanist temple on Kingman's Bluff. (Episode: Graves) At some point between the 1980's to 1990's, Richard Wilkins was again elected mayor when he operated under the name of Richard Wilkins III, and served more than one term. (Episode: Enemies)

In the winter of 1997, Buffy Summers, the active Slayer, moved to 1630 Revello Drive, where she began attending Sunnydale High. There, she met her new friends Willow, Xander, Cordelia, and Oz, as well as her new Watcher, Giles. They formed the Scooby Gang and often hung out at the Bronze and the Espresso Pump coffee house. Buffy's mother, Joyce, worked in an art gallery in Sunnydale.

During their time in high school, Buffy and her friends fought several vampires, most notably the Master, Spike, Drusilla, and Angel. Another slayer, Faith, arrived during their senior year of high school and lived at the Sunnydale Motor Inn until she joined forces with Mayor Wilkins. In June 1999, Sunnydale High was destroyed in a great conflict that killed Mayor Wilkins and Principal Snyder on graduation day.

Buffy and Willow begin attending the University of California, Sunnydale. There they discover that the United States government was operating a "black" (secret) military unit, The Initiative, and has a laboratory and demon confinement complex in a cavern beneath the UC Sunnydale campus. The Initiative is closed down at the end of the season (spring 2000) after a climactic battle with the cyborg Adam. By this time, Tara Maclay and Anya have been added to the Scooby Gang. Later this same year, Giles purchases a magic shop named The Magic Box.

Overview

Prophecies referred to it as being the Valley of the Sun. (Episode: The Harsh Light of Day)

Sunnydale was a somewhat isolated location. Whenever the city was stricken by a town-wide epidemic — such as the silence spell —, no other towns seemed to be nearby.

Sunnydale was said to be divided into five neighborhoods. The first is the entertainment district which contains the Bronze, Sunnydale's nightclub, which attracts some well-known artists despite a clientele consisting mainly of high-school kids. The second is the alleys directly behind Bronze which contain the town's excess supply of pallets and cardboard. The high school makes the third neighborhood. The fourth neighborhood is filled in its entirety by the large graveyard, and lastly the suburban residential sprawl is the final neighborhood. The abundance of very nice homes is made possible by low property values caused by frequent murder. (Episode: Villains)

Alternate Versions

  • In The Wish, an alternate version of Sunnydale was briefly created as a result of Cordelia angrily wishing that Buffy Summers had never arrived in Sunnydale with this being granted by vengeance demon Anyanka. Cordelia found herself in an alternate universe where The Master has risen to the surface and completely taken over the town, with the surviving human population living in terror of the vampires. The school is sparsely populated; curfews are strict; humans wear crosses and drab colors to avoid attracting vampires; and almost all of the people she knew are either dead or have been turned into vampires.
