History
The Than developed on the planet San-Ska-Re that were located in the Triangulum Galaxy. (Website: All Systems University Than) They held the record of being the second species to develop Slipstream technology in 7756 CY completely independently which was only accomplished previously by the Vedrans. (Website: All Systems University Timeline) At some unknown point, the Than Queen died and her heart became known as the Hegemon's Heart which was owned by their species for a period of 10,000 years. (Episode: A Heart for Falsehood Frame) Following their expansion into space, the Than were known to had settled nearly a hundred worlds in their local cluster before petitioning the Systems Commonwealth for entry. (Website: All Systems University Than) After a short mentoring period, the Than worlds were given membership into the Commonwealth. (Website: All Systems University Timeline) This led to many Than colonies being found by every route accessible by Slipstream drive. (Website: All Systems University Than) It was known that a number of Than served within the High Guard where they served as valuable officers within that organization. (Episode: Under the Night) At some point, the Than ambassador gave a ceremonial china plate to the starship Andromeda Ascendant which one of her most prized collections. (Episode: The Pearls that were his Eyes)
At the time of the Nietzscheans Uprising in CY 9784, San-Ska-Re was one of many worlds that were attacked but their invasion was repulsed by the Than Home Guard units though with heavy casualties on both sides. A year later after Tarn-Vedra was cut off from the slipstream, the Than homeworld became the provisional capital of the Commonwealth. (Website: All Systems University) During the Long Night, it could be argued that the Than fared the best in the post-Commonwealth period due to the fact that they were comparatively safe within their home systems. (Website: All Systems University Than) This was because in the year CY 9856, a collection of Than worlds resurrected their previous government namely the Than Hegemony which established control over most of the Than planets. (Website: All Systems University Timeline) As a result, the species reverted to their pre-Commonwealth existence which involved hard work, strict caste lines and an indifference attitude towards the outside universe. The departure of the Than from galactic events was a huge blow to the Known Worlds who had benefited greatly from their legendary industrious nature as well as optimism. (Website: All Systems University Than) The Than Hegemony was not entirely composed of just Than as other species continued to live amongst them and the Hegemony controlled the most stable parts of known space with many of the non-Than citizens adapting well to their social structures. (Website: All Systems University Timeline)
In the year CY 10087, a number of Than came into conflict with Nietzscheans that belonged to the Orca Pride who resided within an asteroid belt and adopted the life of piracy. These Nietzscheans were responsible for raiding Than supply routes for over a period of fifty years. Despite possessing one of the largest fleets in the Known Worlds, the Orca Pride kept moving their asteroid base due to their pulse plasma cannon which was how the Nietzscheans avoided retribution. A Than armada later emerged but Orca Pride departed their home after having their plasma weapon being destroyed by Tyr Anasazi of the Andromeda Ascendant thus allowing the Than Hegemony recognising Dylan Hunt as a force of peace in the universe. (Episode: Double Helix) Later, the Andromeda Ascendant aided in the relief mission of the Pythia colony along with its orbital habitat thus saving a number of Than from a failed Nightsider terraforming project. Beka Valentine believed that the Than were so grateful that they were likely to name their children after both Captain Valentine and Tyr Anasazi. (Episode: The Devil Take the Hindmost)
Afterwards, the Than Hegemony was engaged in hostile relations with Pierpoint Drift when Doge Miskich Var Miskich possessed the sacred Than relic known as the Hegemon's Heart. Despite possessing enough forces to easily overpower the mercenaries that protected the drift habitat, the Than faced the problem of attracting the attention of the Free Trade Alliance who Doge Miskich had signed an alliance with in order to gain their protection from harm. In order to bring about a peaceful resolution to affairs, Captain Hunt of the Andromeda Ascendant attempted to bring diplomatic negotiations into effect with the Than sending Clarion of Loss to represent the Hegemony. When the Doge failed to pay the FTA dues and was in arrears, they removed their support for Pierpoint Drift which left it defenseless if the Than attacked. Though the Than assembled an armada to take the Hegemon's Heart by force, the crew of the Andromeda Ascendant managed to stave off a possible conflict and returned the relic to the Hegemony. (Episode: A Heart for Falsehood Frame)
Afterwards, the Than discovered an infection by the parasitic Bokor race on a drift habitat full of Humans leading to the Than Hegemony attacking it in order to eliminate the infected. However, the Andromeda Ascendant arrived on the scene, completely unaware of the Than's actions and instead rescued the inhabitants of the station. This led to the Than attacking the Andromeda Ascendant with the intention of eliminating her in order to contain the infection. As a result, the Than had deployed a fleet of 20 capital ships and 100 destroyers along with a number of fighters. By this point, the Than Hegemony had upgraded the ECM of their vessels making them much harder to hit and also made improvements in their weapon technology. (Episode: Dance of the Mayflies) During the Pyrians offensive against the Known Worlds, the New Systems Commonwealth sent ambassadors to the Than Hegemony to get their aid to fight off the invasion forces which fortunately ended during the victory at Samsarra. (Episode: Point of the Spear)
Overview
Members of this insectoid species were highly intelligent beings that were generally smaller compared to Humans with distinctive traits such as compounds eyes as well as brightly colored iridescent carapaces. (Website: All Systems University Than) A Than's heart was known to consist of muscle protein. (Episode: A Heart for Falsehood Frame) Their circulatory system involved the use of blue colored blood. (Episode: Under the Night)
All Than were hermaphroditic by nature with mates often laying large clucthes of eggs in a communal burrow. This often saw upto a hundred Than placing their eggs in any given burrow where the genetic material of all the assembled Than was added into the spawn mix. This act produced tens of thousands of small helpless grubs which were not particularly intelligent and were relient on spending the next several months in eating specialized fungi that were grown in Than farms. As they matured, any surviving grubs spun a cocoon around themselves whereupon they underwent a metamorphize that transformed them into an adult. Out of the thousands of grubs, only one in a hundred survived to reach this stage and those that became adults considered all those involving in the spawning process as their "parent". This meant that their society involved a complex web of family relationships with individual Than holding hundreds of parents and siblings that they were able to call in their times of need. (Website: All Systems University Than)
Similar to Terran ants, the Than had a highly ordered society with large cities where their kind worked. However, they did not possess a collective "hive" intelligence but were rather highly individualistic to the point that they took great pride in their appearance as well as their accomplishments as engineers along with being builders. Their society was divided into a caste based system with an individuals caste being determined by the color of their carapace. Yellow-brown Amber Than were the most common and were responsible for the bulk of the work. Dark green Emerald Than were larger and stronger which was why they served as warriors. Bright red Ruby Than were specialists in technology and construction. Whilst brilliant blue Sapphire Than served as scholars and scientists. At the top of the caste structure was the shimmering Diamond Than who were the royal caste that served as priests as well as leaders. It was within this royal caste that their head known as the Overdiamond served as the leader of the entire Than race. (Website: All Systems University Than)
Than were known to keep grub farms. (Episode: Double Helix) It was known that nano-cultures were capable of producing Than anti-biotics. (Episode: The Devil Take the Hindmost) One of the most sacred artifacts of the Than was a crystal known as the Hegemon's Heart which was claimed to be the crystallized ventricle of the first Than queen. At some point before CY 10087, the Heart was lost for at least five generations. (Episode: A Heart for Falsehood Frame)

- Crowned in Starlight : Than Hegemon CY 9843 (Episode: All Great Neptune's Ocean)
- Spring Rivers Flowing : a diamond caste Than that was a Triumvir in the Commonwealth in the time of the Magog invasion and gave a notable speech over the tragedy at Brandenburg Tor. (Website: Fine Arts 'If I had a heart, it would break')
- Clarion of Loss : a red Than who was known as Red Glow at Daybreak Hails a Bloody Shadow, held the position of general and ambassador sent to Pierpoint Drift in order to negotiate the return of the Hegemon's Heart. (Episode: A Heart for Falsehood Frame)
- Vision of Faith VII : an Amber Than who served as Keeper of the Way by CY 10087 and hailed from the Merciful Breath order which had grown in influence since her appointment. She was noted for being deeply spiritual and true to her convictions with one of her goals being to overthrow the caste based system of her species. (Website: All Systems University People of the Way) One of her sayings was "The truest measure of a society is how it treats its elderly, its pets, and its prisoners." (Episode: A Rose in the Ashes)
Colonies
- San-Ska-Re : located in the Triangulum Galaxy and was the homeworld of the Than-Thre-Kull species, it was 13,300 in diameter with a water coverage of 28%. This world's climate was mostly desert but held a population of 23 billion where 94% were Than, 3% were Human and 1% being Nietzscheans whilst 2% were miscellaneous. During the Nietzschean Uprising, it served as provosional capital to the Systems Commonwealth and later the capital of the Than Hegemony during the Long Night. The planet was not considered pleasant due to its hot and arid environment as well as little surface vegetation being present and the world being ravaged by continent sized sandstorms. Despite this, the native Than covered the world's surface with ornate and intricately organized hive cities. (Website: All Systems University San-Ska-Re)
- Pythia : a Mars-type isolated world located in the Triangulum Galaxy with a diameter of 19,300 km and a water coverage of 11%. The climate was in a constant state of flux due to being terraformed by the Hegemony and its population was 11 million with all of them being members of the Than species. Its colonization was done so to relieve the population pressure on their homeworld and terraforming efforts were directed by using the system's Oort cloud in order to crash water-laden comets into the world to create a thin but breathable atmosphere. (Website: All Systems University Pythia)
- Arzawa II : located in the Greater Magellanic Cloud with a diameter of 13,110 km and a water coverage of 95%. The climate of the planet varied and held a population of 120 million where 33% were Human, 28% Perseid, 21% Than, 12% Vedran and 2% miscellaneous. During the Long Night, this planet became a colony of the Than hegemony where the Humans that were native to it living in a modified version of the Than's mating groups as well as caste structures. It maintained a largeuly resource based economy and supplied other worlds of the Hegemony with fish and other marine products. A pogrom against Nightsiders was launched in CT 10065 as they were blamed for a depletion in the world's fisheries. (Website: All Systems University Arzawa II)
