Thirteen (Grimoire of Zero)

Thirteen is a male villain that features in Grimoire of Zero.

Biography

Thirteen was male witch who was part of a community of such individuals that hid from the world and resided in a series of caves in secret which protected them from ordinary humans. The master of their community guided them and kept the witches isolated from the rest of the world with Thirteen being a keen reader of books in the library. One day, a young witch was born among their number with her being known as Zero and Thirteen who was her older brother was given the duty of caring for her. It was said that the other members of the group feared her people but kept her within the caves and sought contemplation of knowledge rather than any interaction with the outside world. During this time, Thirteen came to see that Zero had longed to go out into the world and encounter other people despite the fear humans had of witches. To overcome this barrier, she believed that if she made magic freely available and practical to aid in everyday living then mankind would accept them. Thus, she created the Grimoire of Zero that contained the foundations of magic. Initially, he told her that the magic she had created was dangerous and could be used for evil but Zero did not listen to his warnings. Afterwards, Thirteen sought to make her dream a reality through his own means so that the world would accept her. This led to him secretly murdering the other witches in the cave and stealing the Grimoire. He then told Zero that a mysterious thief had entered into their homes and was responsible for the act. Thirteen told her to stay in the caves whilst he went out into the world to 'recover' the Grimoire for her with her being warned that the world outside was too dangerous for her. After departing, he concocted a plan designed to bring about his vision of a world that was more accepting of witches. To that end, he used the Grimoire to spread knowledge of magic to witches under the guise of a person called 'Him' where he went across the lands ten years ago leading to the spread of magic. In this role, he formed a blood contract with all the witches so that if he died then they would similarly be killed. As a result, the Kingdom of Wesnia developed a large witch population with a cult forming called the Sorcerer's of Zero when 'Him' had the followers use Zero's name. During this time, the peaceful witch Sorena was killed by humans that believed she had brought a plague to them when in reality she was innocent. This resulted in the Sorcerer's of Zero staging attacks against the kingdom in retribution as they sought to topple the king. At the same time, rogue witches had formed that used the magic they had learnt for evil intent. It was then that Thirteen approached the kingdom where he offered to deal with the threat posed by witches and became a Sorcerer of the State that eliminate witches. Thirteen's ultimate plan was to devastate the witch community and create mass upheaval among the citizens of Wesnia until they could accept witches whereupon he intended for Zero to rule them.

Overview

Personality and attributes

He was fixated on the idea of creating a perfect world for his younger sister Zero. This led him to utilise murder, manipulation and other deplorable acts in order to complete his goal. To Thirteen, he believed that only he fully understood Zero and looked after her interests. As such, he did not want her harmed and sought to care for her needs. However, he was not above acts that betrayed her in some respect so long as it achieved his ultimate goal for her. Thirteen believed that Zero's attachment to others was a weakness and thus sought to sever any bonds of friendship with others. Despite that, he did not wish her to be killed or harmed with him ending any battle in order to heal her wounds. When he came to learn Zero's motivations, he decided to abandon his plans at destroying the kingdom. However, he told the Mercenary that if Zero ever came to hate humanity then he would have no hesitation in destroying the world.

Though committing cruel acts, Thirteen did hold regrets over his actions such as being indirectly responsible for the death of Sorena. This was because he felt the witch was a great figure and that the world was at a loss without her. In fact, he stated that he had wished that he had met her as he saw Sorena as a wise witch. As such, he was willing to even be killed by her granddaughter Albus as repentance for his crimes. This included changing his ways and helping Albus in stopping further rogue magic users outside the kingdom who used their powers for ill intent.

Powers and abilities

As a witch, Thirteen was a skilled magical caster with him able to channel his powers through his staff. With it, he could summon trees vines to entrap targets, cause rocks to serve as shields for him, summon demons such as the king of despair and other mystical acts. He could set up barriers around rooms to prevent a person from using their magic. Even witches such as Zero could be rendered powerless within the confines of a spell-barrier. Thirteen could also create a spell that kept a watch over people saying a specific word such as a name. When said, the spell activated creating a single giant eye manifesting in a crack in the fabric of reality. At that point, a forced summoning was created with a portal forming below the targets who were sent to Thirteen's location. The journey was traumatic on the minds of non-magic casters who were trapped in a nightmare during this time until they were freed from the confines of their own mind. Similar to other witches, he could summon familiars in the forms of animals typically as rats. These could serve as his eyes and ears with him able to speak through them. Thirteen was skilled in the art of crafting potions such as one that eliminated the presence of magic in anything exposed to it.

It was said that he specialised in the ability of creating fear from the smallest seeds of doubt. By talking to a person, he could sense their doubts and magnified them allowing him to turn allies against their friends. He could accomplish such feats among larger crowds as well with him being a skilled manipulator allowing him to gather cheers from crowds to support his actions based on any fears or doubts. As such, he could manipulate the minds of others with it being said that he could accomplish this with those of low mental intelligence. This was typically seen in those that felt emotions of anger with their mental intelligence dropping allowing Thirteen to command them. Those who faced this control could be mentally within their senses but their bodies subjected to his control allowing him to control them to the point of getting them to kneel to him.

Much of his magical knowledge came from the Grimoire of Zero though his skills as utilising its power was inferior to that of Zero herself. This was because she had purposely created errors in the grimoire to ensure that they could not be as effectively used as her.

As a Sorcerer of the State, he had the authority of the kingdom behind him allowing him to command its military. These included Knights of the State and other Sorcerers of the State following his orders. As 'Him', he was also the mysterious leader of the Sorcerer's of Zero and had forged a blood-contract with their witches so that if he was ever killed then all those that formed he pact would die as well.
