History

The Time Gem was one of the Infinity Gems where it was a relic capable of manipulating time. It was said to be traced to a cosmic being that existed before all recorded time. Alone in the cosmos, the entity felt only a lonely existence leading to it ending its existence and from its body emerged the Infinity Gems which included the Time Gem. (Thanos Quest v1 #2)

The user could change time's flow (accelerating, reversing, or stopping it entirely), or travel to different periods in the past and future. The Time Gem was possessed by the Gardener, one of the Elders of the Universe, who used it subconsciously to alter the growth of plant life. Thanos confronted the Gardener and slew him, taking the Time Gem for himself and making it part of the Infinity Gauntlet.

The Time Gem remained part of the Gauntlet until Adam Warlock was forced to separate it into its parts, at which point the Time Gem was given to Gamora of the Infinity Watch. Gamora never tapped its full potential, though it did give her visions of the probable future at crucial moments. Along with the other Infinity Gems, the Time Gem was stolen by Rune and scattered across that entity's native reality. Adam Warlock is currently seeking them out.

The Time Stone later fell into the possession of the Skrull thaumaturgist Mt'nox who was given it by the Super-Skrull as he wanted to use the gems power to manipulate time and restore the Skrull empire to its height. At the time, the arcanologist Kanna had brought Doctor Strange to Tarnax II as he was on a quest to restore his magical knowledge. Upon learning of the Time Stone, he decided to attack the Skrulls and take the gem away as he felt it was too dangerous to be left in the hands of others. After successfully stealing it, Kanna wanted the Infinity Stone as she was promised it by Stephen who altered her memories and erased knowledge of the gem from her mind so that Strange could hide the relic in secret. (Doctor Strange v5 #3)

In the wake of the crisis against Requiem, Adam Warlock came to determine that the Infinity Stones were too dangerous to be left in the care of people who could be tempted by their power. Thus, he decided to use the Soul Gem to imbed the others with consciousnesses of their own allowing them to determine their own fate. The Time Gem departed alongside its compatriots where it came to Earth and embedded itself in the body of Hector Bautista who was a criminal given the death sentence at a Texan prison. With the stone selecting him, he gained the power to manipulate time and began to use it for his own goals. (Infinity Wars: Infinity v1 #1)
