Tom Turner was the loyal first mate of Robur's Albatross. He later served as first mate of his captain's second invention, the Terror. In this capacity, he was sent by Robur on many missions to spy on police inspector John Strock, when Robur felt Strock was getting too close. Fanatically loyal to Robur, Turner did not hesitate to obey the seemingly suicidal order to fly the Terror into a raging storm whilst en route to Island X after Strock's capture. When the ship was hit by lightning and fell into the sea, Turner perished with Robur. Only Strock survived.

Master of the World (1961 film)

Turner.

Turner was the first mate of the Albatross and right-hand man of Robur. He alone among the ship's crew was armed with a modified silver flintlock pistol. When the ship was sabotaged by the escaping John Strock and Phillip Evans, Turner tried to kill them as they slid to safety down the vessel's mooring line. He hit and wounded both men, but they dislodged the airship's anchor and sent it spinning out of control. Realizing the Albatross was lost, Robur ordered Turner and the others to abandon ship. They refused out of loyalty, and died alongside their captain when the Albatross hit the water.

Comments

  • In Robur the Conqueror, Turner's first name is given as Tom. However when he reappears in Master of the World, his first name is John. The novel is told from Strock's point of view however, so it is conceivable he misremembered Turner's name. Either way, this article takes Tom to be Turner's canonical first name.
