Torrance-Smythe, known to his friends as "Smithy," was a member of John Smith's team on the mission into Germany to rescue General George Carnaby. He served as the group's cook. Although he was considered very clever and intelligent by his comrades, none of them liked his food, least of all the lone American, Morris Schaffer, who complained about Smithy's goulash. John Smith joked that if Schaffer hated Smithy's goulash, he'd prefer it to his coffee. Torrance-Smythe accompanied Smith, Schaffer, Christiansen, Thomas and Carraciola to the Zum Wilden Hirsh disguised as a German soldier. Smith, returning from a covert meeting with his lover and fellow spy Mary Ellison, found Smithy murdered outside of the inn by an unknown assailant, who was later revealed to be Carraciola.
