When the Mirror Master started grabbing children in the bus Ace was, the dog bit his hand as he came out of one of the mirrors. This allowed the Cheetah to kill him. In Gotham, went to the rescue of the girl Amy, as she had been left behind while the other orphans fled to the sole working bus. He saved her from the Anti-Living and took her to a safe building. Bobo, the Detective Chimp upon witnessing this scene, came to the building to meet them. Ace initially was hostile but calmed down after Bobo told him that he wouldn't harm her. Bobo then stated that he knew a way Amy could flee to Ivy's jungle and the dog brought her outside as instructed by Bobo, after the chimpanzee had met the horse Comet. Comet allowed Amy and Bobo to ride her as she ran towards the Gotham Jungle and Ace fought against the Anti-Living that attacked them. Biography
Pre-Crisis
Ace
Shortly after this, Ace was able to rescue Batman and Robin from a deadly trap created by the criminal known as Cat-Man. Then, Ace was granted super-powers by Bat-Mite, but a twist of fate made the Bat-Hound obedient to criminals until Bat-Mite reversed his spells' effect. (Detective Comics v1 #318)
Post-Crisis
Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Ace
Years later, Wayne acquired a mastiff which had originally been a guide dog belonging to a blind Native American named Black Wolf. The dog remained most of the time in the Batcave along with Harold and they kept each other company, specially during the time when Jean-Paul Valley took over the mantle of the Bat. (Batman v1 #500)
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of history was created with a different series of events.
It was shown that the dog was one of several taken by the Joker who dressed them up in costumes that indicated a different playing card with this one being the ace. Joker later abandoned the dogs as part of some joke with Ace being the only survivor with the others being dead by the time the GCPD and Batman arrived. The dog was taken to the Gotham Pound where the staff intended to put the dog down but Alfred Pennyworth arrived on the scene where he paid a sum of money to purchase Ace. Initially, the dog was highly aggressive with her being confrontational and attacking others necessitating Alfred to engage in training over the span of months as he intended to present the dog as a companion as well as gift to Bruce Wayne. Though Wayne believed the dog was broken, by the time of Christmas Ace was accepted by his master and well-trained with him being referred to as a Bat-Hound due to Alfred's efforts.
