Whitney Howard Lesse, or Howard for short, was the younger brother of Ruth Lesse, with an obsessive interest in Star Trek. Barely able to fend for himself and largely dependent on his big sister, Howard became a target for Joe during his freshman (Joe's sophomore) year. He also suffered public embarassment at one point when a school newspaper story by Billie told how, at a 1998 Star Trek convention, he liplocked with a shocked Kate Mulgrew.

After Ruth died saving Danny, Howard was lost. He even briefly moved in with Ruth's former housemates, who tormented him. Eventually, after Danny, Joe and Billie rented a house together, they let Howard move in with them, and he stayed there even beyond college.
