Biography
Money D. Luffy (Japanese: モンキー・D・ルフィ, Hepburn: Monkī Dī Rufi, [ɾɯɸiː]) was born in Foosha Village in the East Blue region as the son of Monkey D. Dragon and an unknown woman. As a child, he was left in the care of his grandfather Monkey D. Garp' who made his grandson do many dangerous things in an effort to make him stronger. Among these included throwing him off a deep ravine, leaving him alone in the wild and tying him to a balloon. He was 6 years old when Shanks and his Red Hair Pirates had stationed themselves in the village. In this time, the pirate sniper Yasopp told Luffy about a son his age named Usopp that he had left back home. Nearly a year later, he wanted to join the Red Hair Pirates and even stabbed himself under his left eye to prove he was tough enough to be a pirate. Later on, the pirate crew were at Partys Bar where once again Luffy failed to convince Shanks to take him on as a crew member. Personality and attributes
In appearance, Monkey D. Luffy was a male human with black shaggy hair, round black eyes, and a slim muscular build. One of his most prized possessions was his distinctive trademark straw hat. Due to his hat, he came to be known by the name of Straw Hat Luffy (麦わらのルフィ Mugiwara no Rufi?).
Among his most dominant traits and an apparent lack of common sense with his utter fearlessness and unwavering belief in himself.
Since childhood, he longed to be a pirate after seeing Shanks in his hometown. This later developed in a desire to be the King of the Pirates.
Luffy developed close ties to those he considered his friends. In fact, he grew angered if he saw them hurt or injured where he fought to get revenge for them. He was shown to get angry if he saw a person mistreat their friends even if they were his enemies.
Powers and abilities
Originally, Monkey D. Luffy was an ordinary human being with no special powers. As a child, he did say he had powerful punches and was noted for being a good swimmer. He was shown as being more of a brawler and merely used his favorite techniques on the spot sporadically.
Luffy unwittingly ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi (ゴムゴムの実, Gum-Gum Fruit) that was a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that gave his body the property of rubber thus making him one of a Rubber Human (ゴム人間 Gomu Ningen?). This allowed him to stretch any part of his body that snapped back into place as it went back to his centre of gravity. The rubber qualities of his skin meant that he was highly resistant to injuries where punches had a reduced effect on him and even bullets simply bounced off him.
