Richard Palance

A skilled geneticist, he had been a colleague of Professor Charles Xavier who would one day bring to him a Mutant named Rogue after wanting help with her powers. Instead of helping her, he used her DNA spliced with a virus to give himself her power absorption abilities. Drunk on power, he realized that he could attain immortality by absorbing other people's lives, then creating the Strain 88 Virus to do so. At first, he was not completely sure Strain 88 would work, so he used Rogue as a test subject. After establishing a hospital called the Fordyce Clinic, Dr. Palance used the hospital to lure mutants so as to absorb more powers and secretly experiment with splicing mutant DNA into viruses and then infecting baseline human subjects, with the intent of discerning if mutation can be contracted like a disease. (X-Men v2 #194) While continuing to amass several abilities, Dr. Palance began calling himself Pandemic and sought to create Strain 88 to replicate Rogue's power to the point where it can be used to permanently absorb a person's entire personality, leaving the victim summarily erased. Soon the X-Men located him and fought him, in which he revealed he had over 300 powers absorbed. Defeated, all hope was thought lost until Cable threw Sabretooth at Pan, knowing he would absorb Creed's powers. (X-Men v2 #195) However, Pan was unaware of Sabretooth's healing factor, and thus the virus was expunged from his system. A consequence of this was that Pandemic was rendered him completely powerless and losing all the powers that he had absorbed. Afterwards, Lady Mastermind came to realize that Palance was the one responsible for her being comatose for over a year. This led to her looking to enact her revenge where she then left his mind trapped within an illusion. (X-Men v2 #196)

Sometime later, he came to be one of many scientists consulted by Beast for help in reversing the effects of M-Day on Mutants who had been largely depowered as a result. (X-Men v2 #200) He would decline to help McCoy in finding a cure as he felt that Mutants had ruined his life's work and wanted no part in aiding them. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #488)
