Being annoyed at Yohsuke's lack of a response, he threatens him, until Yohsuke reveals he only has 500 yen. Yahabe laments that he is poor, but it didn't matter much as he was starving anyway, offering him his Time Warp card. After Yohsuke jumps off of the tower and the card's power takes effect, Yahabe appears in Yohsuke's room earlier that day, startling Yohsuke. Becoming annoyed at having to repeat himself about his origins to Yohsuke, he relaxes as he acknowledges he is grateful to Yohsuke for ending his hunger, even if only for a measly 500 yen. Overview
Personality and attributes
As such, YVS was an avaricious individual with an unquenchable love for money, and an unabashed elitist, who vehemently despises those he views as middle or low class, claiming to Yohsuke he despises "mixing up with the plebs". YVS has questionable if not downright, non-existent morals. He approached a younger Yohsuke and took advantage of the boy's desperation, lack of self-esteem, suicidal thoughts and utilized his vulnerabilities to manipulate him and trick him into debt, all the while helping to feed and nurture his hatred for the world, and turning him essentially into his main enforcer.
Even during his time YVS was a notoriously underhanded combatant, who rather than improve his spirit and techniques, engaged in bribery, blackmailing and manipulation in order to rid himself of his competition and crown himself Shaman King, much to the disgust of the Patch Officiants of that generation.
Despite innumerable character flaws, YVS has a surprising amount of forethought, immediately recognizing Hao as the most dangerous threat to his regime and seeking to eliminate him when he was just a reincarnated infant. When this failed, he began preparations for an eventual Flower of Maize, knowing full well that Hao would win the next tournament, and thus improve his chances of victory by usurping him later.

During the Shaman Fight, YVS came to win the tournament and ascended to the title of Shaman King (シャーマンキング Shāman Kingu). This allowed him to merge with the Great Spirit (G · Sグレートスピリッツ Gurēto Supirittsu) and take it as his guardian ghost. His position led to him standing amongst the ranks of the other holders of the mantle where they stood as among the God 8 (GODゴッド8, Goddo 8).
