History
The Hellmouth were locations on the planet that served as portals between Earth and Hell dimensions. (Episode: The Harvest)
During the settling of America, the Spanish came upon a region that would eventually become Sunnydale where the settlers noted something unnatural about the region and called it Boca del Infierno. Around 60 years ago, a powerful Vampire named the Master came to this shore not just to feed but to find the Hellmouth. He intended to open the doorway to bring demons onto Earth but an earthquake came to swallow the town and instead trapped him by the edge of the portal. (Episode: The Harvest)
