History
Origin
The Fire Trolls were a race of fiery molten humanoids that inhabited the depths of the Earth.
A group of Fire Trolls emerged from a fissure that caused a submerged volcano to erupt in the secret sea domain of the water sprites. Upon being freed, they went on a rampage with the sprites unable to stop them even with their powers. Quisp later went into the wider ocean to seek out a hero to defeat the Fire Trolls where he came before Aquaman. (Aquaman v1 #1)
Aquaman tries to find ways to stop the trolls, who are attacking his home. The trolls attack an island where the Americans are keeping missile’s at a base, but even their weapons could not stop them. Aquaman figured out that intense cold might stop them; he goes to a mainland laboratory to find a chemical that can freeze the creatures. The chemical doesn't work it just slows them down, the trolls then try to get rid of the stuff but is spilt onto Aquaman and Aqualad, who are frozen. Quisp an extra dimensional ally sends a beam energy at them that shrinks them. They are tiny and need to get to water. Aquaman tricks a pelican into dropping water on them. Then they continue back to the ocean. The shrinking effect was only temporary as they are grow bigger with each step. They meet up with Quisp who tells them trolls took all the missiles. The trolls plan to use the explosives destroy the volcanoes and become the masters of the planet. Aquaman sends Quisp to distract the Trolls by leading them back to the island. Once there he covers them with freeze solution again and Quisp use repelling ray to shrink them. They them take the trolls back to the fissure and attempt to close it for good.
The underwater tribe known as the Lurkers faced constant predation from these monsters who knew them as 'rock creatures'. Typically, they would kidnap the female members of the tribe but to prevent reprisal from the creatures the Lurkers would allow them to take a few of their people for what they thought as the greater good. (Aquaman v5 #52)
During his first meeting with Mera, Aquaman and Aqualad both encountered the Fire Trolls where the Water Sprite Quisp was responsible for defeating the first wave. However, one of the Trolls managed to kidnap Mera with Aquaman managing to free her with the aid of the humpback whale Pakuul who pushed the creature into a group of toxic barrels underwater. (Aquaman v5 #52)
When Aquaman met Noble, his former wife Mera was kidnapped by the Fire Trolls. This led to Orin convincing Noble to put aside his fears of the legends concerning the rock creatures and seek to free Mera where they were confronted by the Lava Lord. (Aquaman v5 #52) In a battle with the two heroes, Lava Lord was defeated leading to the Fire Trolls stopping the attack after losing their leader with Aquaman commanding them to never attack the Lurkers again otherwise they would face his wrath. (Aquaman v5 #53)
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. During ancient times, the Fire Trolls followed the will of the fire elemental known as Karaqu. Long ago, the Atlanteans battled Karaqu when the Maelstrom was part of the world where they reared the avatar-beast Karaqan to battle the fire elemental. The Karaqan succeeded in defeating Karaku and the loss of him allowed the Fire Trolls to fall before the Atlanteans. (Aquaman v7 #40)
Black Boris the Cannibal King of the Fire Trolls came to make a deal with the sorcerer Felix Faust thus joining his cabal in order to steal the Books of Magic and use them for their own personal gain. He was first sent to attack John Constantine and Black Orchid of the Justice League Dark but they manage to escape. However, the cabal still manages to acquire the books of magic. In the final battle between them, Black Boris was taken down and decapitated by I, Vampire and Frankenstein. (Justice League Dark Annual v1 #1)
After the formation of the new Justice League of America, Lobo was dispatched by the team to deal with a Fire Troll incursion on the surface that was attacking the sea life. (Justice League of America v5 #1)
During the Frost King's attack on the world, Aquaman looked for an advantage to battle the villains horde of ice monsters some of whom were besieging Atlantis. Arthur managed to consult with Jurok Byss and learnt of the existence of the underground realm of the Fire Trolls where he decided to recruit them to the cause. At first, he looked to go alone but was joined Mera where they were initially attacked by the Fire Trolls. In the resultant fight, Mera used her aquakinesis to protect herself and her husband from the creatures. This display of her power caused the Fire Trolls to revere Mera where they decided to serve her. Thus, they came to be allies of Atlantis where they joined in the battle against the Frost King's hordes with them being instrumental in saving Atlantis. (Aquaman v1 #66) The Fire Trolls then participated in the final battle against the Frost King where they helped defeat his army of ice constructs allowing for the heroes to put an end to the rampaging Metahuman. (Justice League: Endless Winter v1 #2)
Overview
In appearance, the Fire Trolls were large ogres that dwelt in the fiery world of volcanos deep beneath the planet. (Aquaman v1 #1) They were able to vomit out a stream of molten rock. (Aquaman v5 #52) In fact, they were able to emit flames that burnt underwater like acetylene torches. The creature's tough exterior made that they were immune to projectile weapon fire and even bombs though when facing heavy attacks they were able to condense their mass thus shrinking into a ball-shaped form where they condensed themselves to the point that they were bomb-proof. (Aquaman v1 #1) The Fire Trolls were said to be a mysterious and obscure species formed from the molten heart of the planet. (Aquaman v1 #66)
A capricious breed, the Fire Trolls were said to be fiery in form and nature with them being near mindless where few encountering them having survived the experience. (Aquaman v1 #66) It was said that they were too powerful to cower long from their enemies. (Aquaman v5 #53) One rite among their kind was the Blood-Feast ritual that required the consumption of captives. (Aquaman v5 #52)
