Ethan Avery is a male comic superhero who features in DC Comics.

Biography

Elvis Ethan Avery was born to Dale Avery and Helen Avery where he grew up in the city of Atlanta. He idolized superheroes like Superman and the Flash for the good deeds they did and when he was old enough he decided to joined the United States Army as he saw it as a chance to be a hero. Ethan served one tour in Afghanistan where he earned a reputation of excellence. After his tour had finished Ethan volunteered for the Damage Program that was an experimental procedure which would give Ethan superpowers. Colonel Marie Jonas interviewed Ethan where she accepted him into the program due to his beliefs about heroism. (Damage Annual v2 #1) After several trials and tests in a secret facility known as the Burrow Ethan was given the Damage serum, a concoction designed by Doctor Vess which was based off of the Miraclo Formula. (Damage v2 #5) This serum would allow Ethan to transform into a hulking behemoth known as Damage for one hour a day, although he would have no control over his actions. (Damage v2 #1) This new form was limited to only an hour but provided him with superhuman abilities where he came to be deployed into the field on select assignments. He took part in several missions as Damage though had no memory of those events except he obliterated the enemy forces. His first mission involved him eliminating a fascist military group operating in Vlatava. In another instance, he was deployed to Bialya where Colonel Jonas wanted him to shut down a program headed by a defected scientist looking to replicate Damage for the state. Ethan began to doubt his role because he could never remember what he did as Damage, each time however Colonel Jonas would tell him that every bullet he took as Damage would save a soldier who would've been killed in his place. Eventually Ethan lost faith in his cause, believing it to be unjust to kill with such maliciousness and brutality. (Damage Annual v2 #1)

After one mission Ethan suffered from genetic malfunctions, and so was transported back to the Burrow. During the journey to the Burrow Ethan transformed into Damage and broke out of the plane transporting him. He landed in Atlanta where he was attacked by Liggett with him managing to defeat his opponent allowing him to continue his planned escape. (Damage v2 #1) A day after the events in Atlanta, Ethan found himself waking up in a homeless shelter and was shocked while watch the news when he rampaged in there as Damage. He then went out to calm himself but his positions immediately tracked by the Task Force XI team which intent to capture him. He tried warned them to leave him alone, but was suddenly attacked by Parasite who tried to absorb his life force. However, Parasite eventually collapsed because he was unable to absorb so much energy. Soon after he turns into Damage, Ethan engaged in a fight with the Task Force team and has easily defeated them. With the situation getting worse, Wonder Woman appears and asks the team to step aside so she can face the monster herself. (Damage v2 #2) Damage and Wonder Woman engaged in fierce battle where their strength seemed to be evenly matched. Wonder Woman tried to hold Damage with her magic lasso only to discover that the creature was human. When her lasso became loose, Damage again attacked Diana and caused the buildings behind them to collapse, right as the time-limits of Damage's transformation ran out. Diana informed the League about her confrontation with the creature. Batman promised to continue his investigation into the origins of the creature. The next morning, Ethan, who has returned to his human form, was seen in a coffee shop while watching the news about his fight with Wonder Woman. He decided to leave the city soon after. He wanted to serve though sometimes had doubts on some of his missions. (Damage Annual v2 #1)

The reason he enjoyed the military was because of heroes where he was inspired by the likes of Superman and the others. He though felt frustrated that he could not do anything when compared to them which led to him becoming a soldier. In fact, this was the reason he volunteered for the Damage Program in order to gain powers so that he could make a difference. (Damage Annual v2 #1)

As Damage, Avery experienced memories that felt muffled and he felt a voice speaking to him. (Damage Annual v2 #1)

Powers and abilities

Ethan Avery was originally as ordinary human being with no special powers though had trained to be a soldier. He was noted to had checked out in his physical and scored high on markmanship. It was expected that he would reach the rank of Specialist with Major Alford noting Avery as his best soldier. (Damage Annual v2 #1)

There were 236 trials conducted involving the Damage serum all of which had been failures until Avery. Each time the serum was adjusted where it was believed that Ethan possessed a mutated chromosome. (Damage Annual v2 #1)

With his powerful bodily muscles, he was able to launch himself into the air in a chosen direction. He was able to leap over half of Atlanta in a single bound. (Damage v2 #3)

Whilst transformed, Avery could not remember the events that occurred when he was Damage. (Damage Annual v2 #1) In addition, when he turned human he tended to lose consciousness often leaving him in a vulnerable state. (Damage v2 #1)

By adulthood, he came to join the U.S. Army where he was a Private First Class and was awarded the Bronze Star with V. It was said that he had served with honor and distinction in the U.S. military. Avery came to volunteer to join the Damage Program with high risks involved on the project. (Damage Annual v2 #1)

• In My Adventures with Superman, the Ethan Avery Damage appeared in the setting of the animated television series where he was voiced by actor Jason Marnocha. He was a soldier who was shown to had joined Task Force X at some point where he was eager to eliminate Superman as he believed him to be a threat to the world. Damage was physiologically and cybernetically enhanced when Amanda Waller became the head of Task Force X. Arriving alongside Amanda Waller and Agent Slade Wilson at Superman's Kryptonian Ship to collect Kryptonian technology to prepare for possible incoming threats, Avery is ordered by Waller to search the ship for potential threats. Avery is seen once again disposing of two of Brainiac's drones with an Omega Cannon before informing Waller that the area is clear. Waller then congratulates him and orders him and Wilson to begin collecting any Kryptonian tech he can find. While he does so, Daily Planet reporters Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen try to avoid getting caught by him when the ship starts to shake causing the celing to fall resulting in Avery being separated from Waller and Wilson. Once recovered, he spots both Lois and Jimmy, demanding to know why they are on the ship until Superman arrives to save Lois and Jimmy, destroying the Omega Cannon in Avery hand's. Avery then thanks Superman while he begins to transform, saying that without his people's technology from Zero Day they would not have the technolgy to take his people down before preceding to attack Superman. They continue to fight, resulting in crashing into the Ship's core room where the Kryptonite that Superman used to stop Brainiac invasion is located. Seeing that Superman is too weak to fight, Avery tries to finish Superman off, not knowing that the Kryptonian Tech he's been enhanced with also has the same weakness to Kryptonite resulting in him becoming incapacitated. He once again recovers after Jimmy places the Kryptonite put back into it was capsule, but was knocked out by Jor-El's Hologram as the Ship begins to teleport once again, leaving him, Waller and Wilson to be left in the snowy wasteland. Avery is seen once again tasked with killing Sam Lane due to his betrayal. Finding Sam and Lois in a secret bunker, Sam uses a freeze gun to incapacitate him while they run into the Sewers to escape much to Avery's frustration. After Sam and Lois are found by Slade Wilson after being ousted by Winslow Schott, Avery is order by Wilson to chase them down and kill them both. Arriving at S.T.A.R Labs alongside Wilson and Atomic Skull, they all proceed to fight Sam and Lois until Superman arrives to save them both. After their fighting alerts the civilians inside the lab, Wilson orders both him and Atomic Skull to retreat.
