Long was an old schoolmate of Thomas Wayne, and had nothing but contempt for the playboy lifestyle led by Bruce Wayne, who he felt was a disgrace to the Wayne family name. He was also the man responsible for the firing of Prof. Jonathan Crane, after he felt that Crane's experiments in fear psychology had gone too far. As a result, when Crane became the Scarecrow he sought revenge against Long. The doctor was kidnapped by Crane's hired hands Nigel and Anthony, but he was ultimately rescued by Batman.
