Brainiac was a supercomputer that was crucial to the society of Krypton. Learning that Jor-El's predictions about Krypton's immediate doom were accurate, Brainiac decided that evacuating the planet was illogical and countered Jor-El in front of the Kryptonian authorities (who believed him). Brainiac uploaded himself and the collected records of Krypton into an artificial satellite, then left the planet to its fate.
Over the years, Brainiac added new technologies to himself, and devoted himself to the collection of knowledge- usually by learning everything there was to know about a planet before destroying it. When Brainiac came to Earth, he offered Superman a place at his side, which Kal-El almost accepted before learning the truth. Since then, Brainiac and Superman have battled on several occasions, with Brainiac surviving by copying his intellect to new computers or mechanical bodies.
Superman's battles with Brainiac culminated when the computer attacked Apokolips, and Darkseid gained the aid of the Justice League in battling him. Brainiac's main base (containing numerous duplicate Brainiac bodies) was destroyed as a result, with his last body captured by the League and held in the Watchtower. An accident let him loose, and Brainiac threatened the city of Dakota before Static and the League stopped him.
However, Brainiac is certain to return; he still existed by the 30th century, attempting to use time travel to assassinate a young Clark Kent before being stopped by the Legion of Super-Heroes.
