History
These devices were one of the methods to travel to parallel worlds alongside Einstein-Rosen bridges and quantum mirrors. At some point in the past, S.W.O.R.D. had encountered and became aware of the existence of the Ghost Box technology. During their time, they had encountered a number of Ghost Boxes over the years. They determined that maybe twenty alternate worlds had developed Ghost Boxes. (Astonishing X-Men v3 #27)
After acquiring it, the X-Men were unaware as to the nature of the device and decided to consult Abigail Brand and S.W.O.R.D. (Astonishing X-Men v3 #27)
