Jyn Erso was the daughter of Galen and Lyra Erso. Jyn was left abandoned as a child after her mother was killed by Death Troopers and her father abducted by the Empire to work on the Death Star against his will. She grew up as a Rebel sergeant serving under Saw Gerrera before going her own way.
When Imperial pilot Bodhi Rook defected and went to Saw with a message from Galen Erso, the Alliance, Captain Cassian Andor in particular, sought Jyn's assistance in getting in to see Saw so they could find out what Galen's message was. Accompanied by a ragtag which included Cassian, his droid K-2SO and Baze Malbus and Chirrut Îmwe, Jyn was able to get in to see Saw at his hidden base on Jedha, and learned from her father's message that he'd secretly built a weakness into the Death Star as vengeance for the Empire murdering his wife.
Just then, Director Orson Krennic and Grand Moff Tarkin decided to test the Death Star by destroying Jedha. Everyone escaped except for Saw, who chose to remain behind and die. They flew to Eadu, where Galen Erso had worked as an Imperial scientist for several years. Although, unbeknownst to Jyn, Cassian's mission was to assassinate Galen so he couldn't be used by the Empire further, he couldn't pull the trigger. Jyn tried to reach her father, but a Rebel squadron attacked the facility, and Galen was killed in the process.
Jyn resolved to obtain the complete technical readouts of the Death Star from the Imperial archives on Scarif. When the Allience refused to back her, she and her friends went rogue, stole a ship and went to obtain the plans themselves. With little other choice but to help them, Mon Mothma and Admiral Raddus ordered a full military assault against Scarif. Disguised as Imperials, Jyn, Cassian and K-2 broke into the archives. K-2 sacrificed himself to fend off attacking Stormtroopers, while Jyn and Cassian were able to obtain the data tapes containing the plans.
Director Krennic arrived with two Death Troopers and shot Cassian, seemingly killing him. Undaunted, Jyn climbed to the top of the archive's transmission tower and successfully transmitted the Death Star plans to Raddus' ship, the Profundity. An enraged Krennic cornered her and was about to kill her, before he was shot and wounded by Cassian, who had survived being shot earlier, himself. As the two embraced, they, along with Krennic and everyone else in the vicinity of the archive building, died when Grand Moff Tarkin ordered the Death Star to fire on the facility in a doomed attempt to prevent the plans from being transmitted.
