Biography
Origin
Zachary Gate was a male human born in the modern age where he was a descendant of the Gates family who were a family of architects that came to Gotham City. (Batman: The Gates of Gotham v1 #5)
With Elliot as his captive, the Architect then had him placed at Wayne Tower where he made a modified dead man's switch that activated a timer alongside similar bombs through the city. Despite the efforts of the Bat Family, they were unable to stop the bombs from detonating though they managed to succeed in saving bystanders with this including Tommy Elliot. (Batman: The Gates of Gotham v1 #2)
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

In appearance, Zachary Gate was a middle-aged man who had short blonde hair. He eventually decided to hide his heritage by taking the alias of Dillon May. (Batman: The Gates of Gotham v1 #5) Eventually, he decided to seek revenge against the elites of Gotham and took the name of the Architect. (Batman: The Gates of Gotham v1 #4)
The Architect believed that Gotham's elite should be punished because they betrayed his ancestors namely the Gates family. (Batman: The Gates of Gotham v1 #5) He considered himself to be Gotham's lost son and wanted the city to remember the legacy of the Gates family. As the Architect, he wanted to bring an end to the era ruled by the Gotham 'royalty' and the beginning of a new one. (Batman: The Gates of Gotham v1 #4)
