Biography
Doctor Bedlam was a male member of the race of New Gods where he was an inhabitant of the planet Apokolips. (Mister Miracle v1 #3)
One day, his mind became drawn to the abyssal plane into a dimension found in a crack in reality. Once there, he came to find that he was drawn to the location by the mental powers of Despero and Johnny Sorrow. The two villains had become allies where they sought to destroy their foes in the Justice League and Justice Society. To accomplish that end, they used Doctor Bedlam to conduct an attack on Earth whilst using his technology to travel to the planet to engage in their scheme. As a New God, he was cosmic being of incredible power beyond that of normal humans. He was the wielder of the mind-force that was his mental essence that could inhabit other bodies. As such, he was a being of living thinking energy that had a personality but lacked a body. (Mister Miracle v1 #3)
Serving him were featureless humanoid constructs called Animates that were manipulated by the power of his singular mind. He was capable of inhabiting the bodies of one of his Animates that took on an appearance of his body and allowed him to operate on the physical plane. (Mister Miracle v1 #3)
