When she was younger, she and her brother came to befriend Gordon Savinski who was a student at Empire State University. At some point, he became involved with Betty but they would eventually break up. Around this time, Savinski came to involve Bennett in gambling where they came to lose and end up owing money to the gangster Blackie Gaxton.
