  • The Gentleman was created by Adam-Troy Castro and Mike Zeck where he made his first appearance in the novel Spider-Man: The Gathering of the Sinister Six (March 1999).
  • He was an original novel creation and had not featured or was based on a comic character from Marvel Comics.

Film

  • In The Amazing Spider-Man, the character made an appearance where was credited only as the 'Man in the Shadows' during the mid-credits scene and was portrayed by Michael Massee. He would visit Dr. Curt Connors in his cell at Beloit Psychiatric Hospital where he asked him if Peter Parker knew the truth about his father. Conners would deny telling Parker anything and the Man in the Shadows simply left the room by stepping in the corner of the room.
  • In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the character was identified as Gustav Fiers and was portrayed again by Michael Massee. During the credit sequence, he would visit Harry Osborn who was incarcerated at Ravencroft Institute for his crimes as the Green Goblin. The Gentleman would tell Harry that he was forming a group with Osborn informing him that everything he needed to accomplish his goal was present at the 'special projects' room at OsCorp Tower.
