Biography
Origin
As a young scientist, an aquarium on Krypton was stricken with a spotted disease that affected the aquatic fish with Jax-Ur saving them by finding a special fungal antidote. (Action Comics v1 #310) The laws of Krypton forbade any experiments of untested explosives. Jax-Ur defied this ban and created a missile to destroy a meteor but the projectile missed. Instead, the missile struck inhabited Krypton's moon killing all life on it and shattering it into four pieces. This act also set back the Kryptonian defense program as the moon was intended as an observation base. Following his arrest, Jax-Ur was guilty of his crimes and sentenced to the Phantom Zone. (Adventure Comics v1 #289)
At Kandor, Superman attended a parole hearing of the criminals within the Phantom Zone and among those that appeared was Jax-Ur. He claimed that he showed remorse for his criminal actions and offered his aid in helping Superman save the Atlanteans who had been stricken with a spotted plague. Despite the warnings of the Kandorians, Superman decided to release Jax-Ur but placed a Zone-Shackle on him to enforce his compliance as part of the condition was for Jax-Ur to return to the Phantom Zone following his aid. After his release, he used a Time Bubble where he along with Superman went back in time to before Krypton's destruction where they arrived at Jax-Ur's old laboratory at the Jewel Mountains. Once there, he secretly drugged Superman to keep him unconscious whilst he crafted the basis for Jewel Kryptonite that would form after the planet's destruction and head towards Earth from the cataclysmic explosion of the planet. After the goal was complete, he aided Superman by finding an antidote for the spotted plague in the Scarlet Jungles from the native fungus and also saved Kal-El's life from a Thought-Beast. When they returned to their normal time, Superman thanked Jax-Ur for his aid and said that his deeds would be told to the parole board. Back in the Phantom Zone, his fellow criminals believed Jax-Ur to be a traitor but he stated that this was all part of his plan. At that point, the Jewel Kryptonite he helped create landed on Earth and Jax-Ur hypnotized Jimmy Olsen to expose it to Superman. Afterwards, it influenced his mind making him believe his presence was causing power sources to explode which Jax-Ur intended to blackmail the Man of Steel for the release of all the criminals in the Phantom Zone. It was only the telepathic powers of Lori Lemaris that exposed this lie as being a mental projection that showed Superman the truth with Jax-Ur being thwarted where he remained within the Zone. (Action Comics v1 #310)
