Biography
Kai Chisaki (Japanese: 治ち崎さき廻かい, Hepburn: Chisaki Kai?) was a male human born in Japan during the time when the world saw the rise of Quirk users. Chisaki himself gained an ability that allowed him to break apart anything he touched or reform it. As a young boy, he was left without a family until he was taken in by the boss of the Shie Hassaikai Yakuza gang. The Boss was a father figure to Chisaki who came to be loyal to him for taking him into the gang. This time, however, proved to be a turbulent moment for criminal organisations due to the rise of Pro Heroes and particularly the symbol made by All Might. From a young age, he was noted to regularly get into fights with other people with this typically being the case when the honour of the Yakuza was being insulted.
To help circumvent their losses, Chisaki began to start trading in drugs though this was against the express wishes of his Boss. He was later asked by the Boss to help understand the nature of his granddaughter's Quirk after the girl was abandoned by her mother when her ability killed her father. Initially, it was believed that Eri's power was similar to Chisaki's but upon closer examination Kai believed it was far different. From her powers, he came upon a new strategy that he believed would save the Shie Hassaikai from fading away. This included harvesting Eri's blood to create a drug that destroyed Quirk's which they could sell to supervillains whilst selling the cure to heroes. As the drug was made from Eri, it meant that they would hold monopoly over its development thus restoring the organisation to its former glory. The Boss, however, was appalled at this and believed that Chisaki should not trade away his humanity and become a monster in the process. In desperation, Chisaki decided to forcibly enact his plans and used his powers to render the Boss unconscious with him being in a coma-like state. He then set himself as the new successor of the organisation in order to enact his strategy with the intention of restoring the Boss after he completed his goal. This saw him using Eri as part of his experiments in better understanding and exploiting her powers where he simply restored her after her body was too badly hurt from the work. To test its power, early versions of the drug were sent onto the black market so they could test its effectiveness. Eventually, Chisaki looked to absorb the power of the League of Villains into his organisation to increase its power.
He and the Shie Hassaikai later targeted the Team Reservoir Dogs where they destroyed the criminals. Overhaul came to comment on how it was weird to see a group of adults team up simply to steal money from a register at a store. He concluded that the criminals were sick and that they needed to be cured. Afterwards, he came to be approached by Twice of the League of Villains who introduced Overhaul to his leader namely Tomura Shigaraki. Unimpressed with League of Villains, Overhaul explained to them that with All For One's downfall someone had to emerge as the next ruler of the underworld. Tomura would claim that he would be the next ruler of the criminal underworld after he gathered more members and crushed the current Hero society. Overhaul though would ask Tomura if he had a plan to which Shigaraki expressed confusion as he thought Overhaul wanted to join them. Chisaki expressed disappointment as seeing that Tomura had no plans to achieve his goals and believed that Shigaraki had wasted the potential of his previous allies. Instead, Overhaul revealed that he had wanted the League of Villains to instead join his organization so that he could teach them the proper way to run a villain group with him planning to use them to gain financial capital so that he could become the next underworld ruler. A fight then erupted with Magne using her powers to magnetise Overhaul and bring him within range of her weapon. In response, Overhaul touched Magne where the physical contact allowed him to use his Quirk that caused villain to explode much to the surprise of Shigaraki and his comrades. Chisaki would blame the League of Villains for starting hostilities which was when Mr. Compress looked to avenge Magne by using his Quirk on the Shie Hassaikai boss. However, the villain was shot with an anti-Quirk gun with Overhaul being enraged over being touched causing him to sever Mr. Compress's left arm. A furious Tomura then looked to kill Overhaul using his abilities with one of Chisaki's men stepping in the way causing him to be disintegrated. The rest of the Shie Hassaikai arrived in support of their leader leading to a stand-off between the two groups. Overhaul concluded that both had suffered equal losses and that they should cease further fighting with the two speaking again once Tomura had calmed down. Departing, Overhaul left a business card for Tomura who alongside the League of Villains were angry at the death of Magne.
The following weekend, Overhaul chases after Eri and unintentionally bumps into Izuku Midoriya and Mirio Togata. Overhaul apologizes to Izuku for his daughter's behavior because she gets carried away with her fun and games. Mirio tells Izuku that he forgot to put his mask on. As Mirio apologizes to Kai, Izuku is aggravated by his mistake of letting Overhaul know that he and Mirio know each other, which will make Sir Nighteye's job more difficult. Izuku acts innocuously to correct his mistake while Mirio identifies Overhaul as a member of the Shie Hassaikai due to his mask, to which Overhaul states not to pay heed to his mask as he simply dislikes dirt. Kai mentions that he has never seen the two of them before and wonders if they are rookies due to their youth. Mirio replies that they are indeed rookies. Overhaul asks Mirio the Hero office he is affiliated with and Mirio replies that they are still students participating in field training. Mirio and Izuku prepare to leave, but Eri tells Izuku not to leave as she starts shedding tears. Izuku tells Overhaul that his daughter is frightened by something, to which Kai replies that he scolded her. However, Izuku is not convinced since Eri is clutching onto him tightly and suspects that there is more than meets the eye. Izuku asks about the bandages, which Overhaul replies that Eri falls down a lot, but Izuku is still not convinced as she is completely frightened and finds the situation to be unnatural. Overhaul politely asks Izuku to not impose his idea of normal on other's families while Mirio tries convincing Izuku to leave since many people have different dispositions. Izuku breaks the ice and asks Overhaul what he is doing to the girl. Overhaul gives in and tells the heroes to follow him as his situation with his daughter is an embarrassing topic. Overhaul, Mirio, and Izuku holding Eri follow Overhaul into the alley. Kai comments that his daughter defies him all the time and finds understanding children to be quite difficult especially when it comes to considering the kind of person they want to become. Izuku and Mirio see Overhaul removing his glove and has killer intent. Suddenly, Eri runs to her father, causing Overhaul to stop removing his glove. He apologizes to Izuku and Mirio for Eri's tantrum and thanks them for listening to his worries. Kai wishes the heroes good luck as he leaves with Eri. Mirio stops Izuku from going after Eri while commenting that Overhaul used his killer intent to make Eri listen to him. Mirio asks Izuku to respects Sir Nighteye's orders because chasing Overhaul too far will make him harder to catch.
At his hideout, Overhaul comments on Eri's sickly behavior and asks Chronostasis to prepare a bath as his subordinate apologizes for letting Eri out of his sight. However, Overhaul is not interested in the subordinate's excuse and kills the subordinate with his Quirk, telling Chronostasis to clean up as well. Chronostasis prepares to carry out his leader's orders, while Overhaul comments that all people were sick with Hero Syndrome. Overhaul wants Eri to stop being selfish, as she is the key to his entire plan. Overhaul shows her an experimentation lab and asks her to no longer sully his hands. Then, Mimic arrives with a phone, telling him that Tomura wants to give his answer to his proposal. A few days later, both Overhaul and Tomura meet face-to-face once again, this time in a room beneath Shie Hassaikai's headquarters. Mimic asks Tomura if what he said on the phone the other day was true and if he would side with them depending on the conditions. Tomura puts his foot on the table and states that their villain organizations' motives align; Overhaul wants to use the influence of the League of Villains' name while he wants to expand their influence. Overhaul asks Tomura to put his foot off the table, but Tomura defiantly says that he should be bowing before him in respect. Tomura tells Overhaul that the League of Villains do not answer to anyone and they move however they like, but that the League of Villains are willing to work with anyone in a 'joint venture'. Overhaul asks if this is the only condition, to which Tomura states there was another condition: Overhaul must tell him about his plan since he cannot give his organization's name for a worthless scheme. Tomura reaches into his coat for something. Suddenly, Chronostasis, Overhaul's right-hand man, puts his gun at Tomura's head while Mimic uses his Quirk and grabs Tomura on the head. Kai orders Chronostasis and Mimic to leave Tomura alone, as he willingly came to their hideout to discuss the future. Chronostasis and Mimic obey their leader's command. Tomura pulls out what seems to be a tranquilizing bullet and says that Mr. Compress was no longer able to use his Quirk after the bullet was fired at him; he then asked if Overhaul's plan had anything to do with it. Overhaul replies that he is going to destroy justice. Overhaul comments that he heard that All For One controlled others by taking their Quirks; his plan brushes up on that approach a little bit and notes that all the preparations are proceeding according to plan.
With his defeat, he was arrested by the authorities and was being transported to a hospital that treated wounded villains. During the transport, the armoured prison car was attacked by the League of Villains who managed to remove the guards protecting Chisaki. Shigaraki then approached the captive Overhaul where he took the completed Quirk destroying drug and the cure. He then decided to take his revenge against Chisaki by using his own Quirk to destroy Overhaul's hands. This act thus preventing Chisaki from ever using his power ever again and he witnessed his plans pillaged by Shigaraki with him left screaming at his loss.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Kai Chisaki was a pale man with a narrow build along with short, shaggy auburn hair that was parted to the left. He went by the supervillain name of Overhaul (オーバーホール Ōbāhōru?) that was named after his Quirk.
Kai was shown to be germaphobic who hated anything he perceived as unsanitary where he frequently remarked about the unclean appearances of certain people and locations.
He came to strongly believe that Quirks were a plague on the world and people infected with 'Hero Syndrome' were responsible for ruining the Boss's life. It was this reason that led to him falling down a darker path in life and went about finding a way to eliminate Quirks from people. In fact, he became obsessed with returning the world to the way it was before the Quirk phenomenon.
It was shown that he did not value humans and saw them as pawns for their utilitarian value. Such was his cruelty that he had no issue with experimenting on Eri to the point that her body was badly damaged. He was shown to psychologically torment her as part of his method in controlling her. This led to him telling her that she was a cursed child and that she caused nothing but pain or death to those that helped her. Thus, he stated that it was only himself that was able to take care of Eri.
The only person Kai has ever shown true concern for is the former boss of the Shie Hassaikai, who rescued him from the streets at a very young age and raised him as a yakuza. Kai, to this day, still feels deeply indebted to his boss for taking him in, being adamant in returning said debt by returning the yakuza to their glory days somehow. Ironically, despite his sociopathic mindset and inhumane treatment of others, this makes his ideals about family much more personal than any other members of the organization. Aside from this, he has also shown to value Hari Kurono, his childhood friend and right-hand man, having healed his injuries and being the only one of his subordinates he does not treat as disposable.
As the Shie Hassaikai leader, Kai was shown to be usually a level-headed person who thought strategically. As a young yakuza, Kai was extremely ruthless and would kill anyone who didn't show the Shie Hassaikai the proper respect, constantly getting into fights with rival gangs. Kai's boss, who was growing aware of the violent, immoral path his underling was following to uphold the name of the Shie Hassaikai, attempted to sway him towards a more honorable course, but to no avail; Kai became more and more convinced that illegal, questionable dealings were the only way the yakuza could ever restore their former honor. This would lead the misanthropic Kai to develop an interest in the boss's granddaughter, because he considered her rewinding abilities a golden opportunity for the Shie Hassaikai, believing that he could produce a Quirk-Destroying Drug out of her cells that would give the yakuza enough power to take control of the black market.
Powers and abilities
Kai Chisaki was a human born with a Quirk (個こ性せい Kosei?, lit. "Individuality") that gave him a superhuman ability. As a Quirk bearer, Chisaki was an Emitter type with his ability being called Overhaul (オーバーホール Ōbāhōru?). It granted him the power to disassemble anything he touched and reassembled it in any configuration he desired effectively giving him full control over matter. Such was his power that he even gained the attention of All For One who was the premiere supervillain in Japan.
With this power, he could kill a person instantly with a single touch and reform them. With this power, he could disassemble people to kill them or reassemble them to heal their wounds. Chisaki could also apply this power to himself as he was able to reform his own body to repair any injuries to himself. This made him dangerous in a long drawn out confrontation as his foe could suffer from injuries whilst Kai could simply restore his damaged body. He could also use this power to rip apart a person and merge their body with his own in a process that would kill the other individual. With this, Overhaul could add body parts to his own and even add other Quirks to himself.
In battle, Kai could freely manipulate his surroundings whereby he could modify the ground to manoeuvre himself and reshape the area into a state that was advantageous for him and harmful for his opponents. By touching his targets, he could completely blow their body apart, whether it be a limb or the entirety of it.
As a child, he came to join the ranks of the Yakuza group known as the Shie Hassaikai (死し穢え八はっ斎さい會かい Shie Hassaikai?, literally meaning the "Eight Precepts of Death"). It was originally led by the Boss until he fell in a coma with Overhaul taking over the organization. As leader of the Hassaikai Group, Overhaul was a very organized person that can factor in the abilities of multiple people in order to initiate coordinated, and well-planned attacks.
