History

Sir Crocodile and Baroque Works in One Piece v1 #21.

Baroque Works (Japanese: バロック・ワークス, Hepburn: Barokku Wākusu) were a criminal organization that had been established by Sir Crocodile. The pirate served as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea and thus had ties to the World Government. Thus, officially, he was said to work with the Marines in maintaining order and eliminating the threat from rogue pirates. In reality though, Sir Crocodile sought power for himself and he came to believe that an ancient superweapon known as the Pluton resided in the Arabasta Kingdom. Thus, he looked to destabilize the nation so that he could claim it with impunity whilst not affecting his public reputation. To accomplish that, he created Baroque Works where he was its secret leader operating under the name of Mister Zero with his identity being a closely guarded secret. Amongst his earliest recruits was the archaeologist Nico Robin as her expertise was invaluable in acquiring the Pluton. As such, Robin worked as his partner under the name of Miss All Sunday where she served as his liaison to the rest of the organization.

Looking to destabilize Arabasta, Crocodile enacted his secret plan that involved the illegal substance known as Dance Powder (ダンスパウダー, Dansu Paudā). Three years ago, Baroque Works agents disguised as delivery men brought a large shipment of Dance Powder to Erumalu's port. They staged an accident in which the cart broke apart and the sacks containing the Dance Powder ripped open and the Powder spilled out. The agents then lied that the king had ordered for the powder to be delivered to Alubarna, the city where it rained the most. They then fled leaving all those who witnessed the staged accident to doubt the king. A large scandal then arose around King Cobra as suspicions that he had been stealing all of the country's rain came about because of the incident in Erumalu. This scandal was further intensified when large amounts of Dance Powder were somehow brought into and discovered in Cobra's palace. Crocodile, the leader of Baroque Works, then further intensified the scandal by using the Full to process large quantities of Dance Powder to create a drought in Arabasta. As a result, the people of Arabasta blamed the king for the drought. As towns dried up and people starved, a rebellion was stirred up to overthrow Cobra for a crime he did not commit. With the reputation of the King was sullied and a rebellion instigated, Princess Nefertari Vivi along with Igaram who was the Captain of the Royal Guard. They came to find out these events were possibly influenced by a criminal organization. The two then infiltrated the criminal organization Baroque Works in order to discover the identity of the mastermind and ultimately prove the king's innocence. Once there, she discovered that the villain responsible for the chaos in her homeland was none other than Crocodile.

In the meantime, the Officer Agents have gathered in the Spiders Cafe and are led to Rainbase for the briefing of their final mission as Baroque Works. Meanwhile the Officer Agents of the Baroque Works met up with Miss All Sunday and Crocodile in the basement of the Rain Dinners Casino, owned by Crocodile. They are told the goal of the Baroque Works, their final mission and their respective parts in overthrowing Arabasta. They are interrupted by Mr. 3, who tells them that the Straw Hats and Vivi have escaped him during their time in Little Garden. He asks Crocodile for forgiveness, but were fed to his pet Bananawani that were huge crocodiles with banana-shaped growths on their heads. The Officer Agents all get pictures of Vivi and the Straw Hat crew excluding Sanji with the help of Bon Kurei's abilities and are given the order to hunt them down. The Straw Hat Pirates got chased by the two and their Marine squad, which also draws the attention of the Baroque Works Billions stationed. Princess Vivi tried to stop the rebel army, but a dust cloud caused by a Baroque Works agent under cover in the royal army prevents the Rebel Army from seeing her. She was covered by Karoo to not get trampled down by the rebel army. As she woke up, she was greeted by Usopp, but she sees through Mr. 2's disguise as he did not show her the special mark under his cloth. Karoo runs off with her climbing the steep walls of Alubarna but still is pursued by Mr. 2. However, he got delayed by Sanji, who bought Vivi time to get to the palace.

Overview

In appearance, Baroque Works was a criminal organization consisting of pirates that operated in the world.

The syndicate contained over 2,000 members, with operations ranging from the Grand Line's Paradise region to the East Blue. Its leader heavily enforced secrecy throughout the organization with most members assigned codenames and often forbidden from interacting with higher-ranked personnel; his own identity was kept the highest secret, and any would-be threats were immediately marked for execution.

Its members were employed as common bounty hunters and mercenaries whilst its elite members contained significantly skilled combatants and spies. On a day-to-day basis, most members were assigned to fundraising, especially through bounty hunter work.

Teams were further divided along two subcategories namely:

  • Officer Agents (オフィサーエージェント Ofisā Ējento?) :
  • Frontier Agents (フロンティアエージェント Furontia Ējento?) :

The bulk of Baroque Works' membership consisted of foot-soldiers assigned as the agents' subordinates with these being the 200 Billions (ビリオンズ Birionzu?) for the Officer Agents, and 1,800 Millions (ミリオンズ Mirionzu?) for the Frontier Agents.
