Kurakara are an alien species from Martian Gothic: Unification.

History

The Kurakarak were an ancient Martian alien species that once flourished on the planet Mars long before the rise of mankind on neighbouring Earth. These aliens referred to their homeworld by its primordial name of Akarak where their civilization flourished when life on Earth was no more than a primordial soup in the early shallow oceans. David Cheng's speculations indicated that when the oceans of Mars evapotated over three billion years ago, the Kurakarak first began to move underground to regions that consisted of thermal springs. Once there, they began to adapt the natural caverns to their own purposes. This led to the gradual spread of a network of underground cities beneath the Martian surface and one such site known as the Necropolis was one of the last underground dwellings. The fate of the cities over the billions of years was largely unknown. In a report by Dr. John Farr in 2019, the end of their race came around five to one hundred million years ago where their kind faced extinction. During this time, the Kurakarak encoded their own genetic imprint into the deathless bacteria within their bodies. A hypothesis by Dr. Farr explained the dream-sight that led to mankind learning the Kurakarak name of Mars along with the name of their own primal race. Dr. Farr claimed that these names were whispered to early mankind across the gulfs of time which was the inspiration for H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos of beings such as the Old Ones, Yog-Sothoth and Nyarlathotep. Thus, the Kurakarak inspired the concept of extradimensional beings that waited beyond the threshold to reclaim or seize a world.

By 2018, the Human Vita-1 research base encountered evidence of extant Martian life as part of Operation Akarak. This saw the Kurakarak be reborn as their encoded bacteria found new hosts amongst mankind on Mars. By 13 January 2019, the Vita team encountered the Martian aliens sarcophagus-shell was opened and it released streams of bacteria. This saw twenty-seven team members who formed into nine transmuting clumps of consciously organized bacteria. An agonizing transformation from Humans into Trimorphs that ran amok and began to tear the base asunder along with any surviving Humans. Thus began the Ares Contagion where he bacterial outbreak infected hosts with the various Humans in orge to merge with one another.

Background

According to a report from Dr. John Farr, the Kurakarak were a grosteque race of beings with three-lobed brains along with threefold bodies. David Cheng commented that the ancient Martians were oxygen breathers like Humans but that was believed to be all that they held in common with Earth's inhabitants. They were noted for sharing a consciousness that was centered around a kind of sovereign. It was expected that the Sovereign slept a dreamless sleep and that their minds were completely alien with humans being unable to begin to imagine their thought processes. Each of their nest-cities was believed to be governed by its own sovereign. Paranormal activity at the Vita-1 base indicated that their manifestations showed that the Kurakarak had abilities that included telepathy, telekineses along with acts that could be construed as possession. It was speculated by Farr that the aliens were able to exist slip in and out of space-time continuum that formed the world-borders of Humans. After their extinction, the Kurakarak's encoded triplicate bacterium in their bodies to replicate their minds and physical forms in any unlucky host. These bacterium were composed of three distinct interlocking bacteria that were similar to the three main types of Earth bacteria namely bacillus, coccus and spirillum. Each individual host was capable of being infected only with one strain of Martian bacteria. Each of these bacterium entered a host separately but when all three were present in three hosts - they drew the hosts to one another.

Infected hosts lumped together to form multi-limbed beings known as Trimorphs. Apparently, when two humans infected with different bacteria start to merge or bimorph an instinct guides them straight to the nearest host that carried the third strain of bacteria. These Trimorphs were mangled shape of three clumped Humans that were infected by three different bacteria namely rod, oval and spiral that were fused together into a living clumb whilst the bacteria bred at an exponential rate. This saw the host metamorphosese into a threefold creature that was part-human and part-Kurakarak. Beyond a distance of about ten meters, each bacterium was unable to exert sufficient attraction to pull hosts together. If an infected host kept their distance, even if the bacterium were active in them, they began to experience only minor discomfort for the first twelve hours. However, death was certain within 24 hours unless a serum such as Triune was administered. Without such a cure, the hosts inevitable drew together into Trimorphs and those left over who cannot form the rod-oval-spiral pattern instead quickly died before rising as undead beings called the Nondead. It was believed that the Nondead were manipulated by the Kurakarak sovereign. It was speculated that Trimorphs and their offspring thrived on heat and oxygen based on the environment at the ruined Vita-1 base. Trimorphs periodically gave birth to much smaller venomous creatures that possessed a vicious sting. These creatures emerged from the Trimorphs on several occasions and were produced at such a rate that they were able to swarm their prey.

Kurakarak alien architecture included Cyclopean ruins that was described as being similar to the works of Lovecraft and were raised before life crawled out of Earth's oceans. It was believed that none of the primordial Martians manufactured their technology in the manner Humans did but rather that it was organic in design. One such example was a device referred to as a sarcophagus that was actually a form of cocoon that appeared as an impenetrable extrusion from whatever lies within it similar to a clam in its shell. A membrane covering the device that was impenetrable barrier that was able to resist attempts at breaking through its surface. A region known as the Regal Tomb was actually some form of nest and it was believed that acoustics were a fundamental part of Kurakarak's organic technology though the means this was accomplished was unknown. Their underground cities were formed from natural caverns that included apertures of dozens of air filtration shafts to the surface that functioned as a Recyc. Another example of their technology was seen in a sub-cavern designated the Cathedral that was believed to be some form of psionic regenerator.
