History

The Cathexis examining a group of humans.

The Cathexis were a pair of entities from the Sixth Dimension who created Id, a sentergy which could make desires into reality. Sending Id to three-dimensional space- Earth in particular- to test it, the sentergy latched onto Superman's subconscious desires and split six of the Justice League of America- Superman, Plastic Man, Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner), the Flash, Batman, and the Martian Manhunter- into their superheroic selves and their human alter egos. The result was an increasing and dangerous personality divergence in all twelve.

The Cathexis claimed Id escaped their realm by mistake, and asked the JLA to help recapture it. However, they simply used the JLA to find Id, so they could take control of the sentergy and use it to manipulate reality to their whims. The Cathexis were narrowly stopped when Eel O'Brien (Plastic Man's alter-ego) used one of their devices to partially remerge the alter egos with the JLA- a process brought to completion by Wonder Woman. The Cathexis were defeated when the Flash used Id to divide them into four three-dimensional beings, whereupon Batman soundly thrashed them. Directed by the JLA's combined will, Id sent the Cathexis back to the Sixth Dimension and sent itself into non-existence.

The Flash used the power of the Id against the Cathexis where he split the two 6-Dimensional beings into four 3-Dimensional beings allowing Batman to knock out the aliens. Despite the defeat, Flash was tiring out due to the strain of using his vibrations to maintain control of Id. Martian Manhunter was asked to link the League together telepathically where as a united group they desired for Id to destroy itself. The wish granting sentergy complied where it nullified its existence but not before restoring all the humans affected by it and returning its creators back to their home dimension whilst removing the knowledge on how to create another Id. Overview

In appearance, the Cathexis were grey-skinned aliens that had two arms and seemingly floated in the air under their own power. (JLA v1 #52) It was noted that they found 3-D bodies to be awkward. They spoke in broken packets of alien speech that was sewn together in supersonic echos. (JLA v1 #53) Their senses allowed them to see 3-D beings even if they were cloaked from in invisibility. As 6-D beings, they were able to slip through traps made for them. (JLA v1 #54)

The Cathexis referred to inhabitants of the Third Dimension as being Cube-Landers. (JLA v1 #54)

They developed the Id that was a sentergy capable of granting wishes and fulfilling the desires of people. (JLA v1 #52) The term Id was a translation from the Cathexis language and was termed for the convenience of humans. It had the power to alter the vibrations of subatomic particles that determined a substances physical properties thus repolarising and reshaping matter. The Id was able to respond towards mental commands but meant that this force could break free whereupon it homed in on the strongest of superhuman wills with it granting their deepest wishes. The Cathexis possessed devices that could undo the Id's effects by using trace energy in the wisher's mind. (JLA v1 #53)
