Sauron (Marvel)
Sauron was originally Dr. Karl Lykos, a doctor who, as a young man, was bitten by pterodactyls from the Savage Land that were attacking his love Tanya Andersson. The bites somehow altered Lykos, making him need to drain life energy to survive.
He later became a confidant and ally of Professor Charles Xavier, but while treating an injured Havok, Lykos drained his energies (as he had to others through the years using a machine he invented). However, the mutant energies affected Lykos differently, and he transformed into a humanoid pterodactyl-like creature. His personality became twisted and altered, and he renamed himself Sauron (after the J.R.R. Tolkien villain). In addition to the sharp claws and flight ability granted by his new form, Sauron also had a powerful ability to hypnotize.
Sauron battled the X-Men on several occasions since his first transformation, despite Lykos' attempts to avoid mutant life energy after each drain's energy was used up. Lykos eventually made his way into the Savage Land. However, some years later, Lykos and Tanya Andersson were captured by the Toad. The Toad force-fed all of Tanya's life energy to Lykos, which somehow made Sauron's transformation permanent. Sauron spent some time with the Toad's incarnation of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, before heading to live in the Savage Land. More recently, he was drafted into the new Weapon X program.
