History

The Chantry was a religion that formed among humans in the lands of Thedas. Originally, it formed as the Cult of the Maker and was among the many cults that formed among the legend of the martyrdom of Andraste. During its early existence, it lacked a formalised structure or leadership with its many followers actually being oppressed where the had to hide their teachings from the magisters of the Tevinter Imperium. By -130 Ancient, practitioners began to grow in popularity as their teachings became more organised though it still remained fragmented until it was formalised bythe actions of Kordillus Drakon who was the first emperor of Orlais. In -3 Ancient, he established the creation of Andrastianism as a national religion and himself as a fervent believer in the Maker thus leading to the creation of the Chantry. It was three years later that the new faith received its first leader who was declared as Divine Justinia I who became closely linked to the military expansions of Orlais. During Drakon's successful military campaigns in the Second Blight, his empires borders began to grow and the conquered people began to convert to the faith of the Chantry.

Overview

In appearance, the Chantry was a religious organization that believed in the teachings of the martyr Andraste and the belief in the deity of the Maker. Its ranks was open only to women who constituted the majority of the faith.

Leadership of the faith was held by a woman who took the title of Divine.

During times of war, the Chantry could call upon a holy crusade against an enemy leading to the calling of an Exlated March.

Within the Tevinter Imperium, they had their own separate splinter branch of the faith that was known as the Imperial Chantry. This version was a mirror opposite of the orthodox Chantry where it possessed its own leader who were known as the Black Divine and had men among its ranks. The Imperial Chantry reinterpreted the teachings of Andraste regarding certain teachings such as the view on magic.
