History

Evangelions (Japanese: エヴァンゲリオン[?]) were large humanoid mecha created by NERV following first contact with Angels by humanity.

This led to humanity developing the Evangelions that were Multi-purpose Humanoid Fighting Machines.

The failed attempts at creating a functional Eva Unit had their remains hidden in the lowest levels of Nerv headquarters where most of these failed creations having their organic structures rotting away.

Overview

In appearance, Evangelions were giant humanoid mecha with features similar to a human except with an exaggerated torso/waist proportions and varying head forms. They were described as being the most advanced weapon system devised by man with them being classified as the synthetic humanoid Evangelion. Though appearing as gigantic mecha, the Eva's were actually cyborgs as they integrated a primarily organic being with a substantial amount of mechanical infrastructure around them. Their bodies were formed by Particle-Wave Matter though their shape seemed to be determined genetically rather than through their A.T. Fields.

A capsule known as an entry plug was used to house the pilot that controlled the Evangelion though the extent of their control did vary. The pilots themselves were selected from fourteen year olds whose mothers had died after the Second Impact. They were chosen by the Marduk Institute and designated in numerical order as children such as First Child, Second Child and so on. The reason for this was because the soul's of the pilots mothers were integrated into the Eva thus enabling a psychic link between the mecha and the user. Once connection was established, the entry plug was filled with a translucent breathable liquid known as LCL that allowed the pilot to electrochemically control the Evangelion. It filled the Entry Plug with the pilots lungs being filled with it where it oxygenated the blood directly. The LCL liquid had been mentioned on numerous occasions as smelling like blood and in reality it was derived from the blood of the second Angel Lilith. Pilots also wore special uniforms known as plug suits and utilized interface headsets to achieve a better level of synchronization with their Evangelion. It was shown that some could be modified to operate on an autopilot system called Dummy Plugs that were based on the thought patterns of either Rei Ayanami or Kaworu Nagisa. In some circumstances, Evas could also lose control and go 'berserk' such as when the pilot was under extreme duress.

Though possessing armor, an Eva's primary defensive trait was the capacity to generate an Absolute Terror Field (AT Field). This was a form of force shield that protected the mecha from all forms of conventional attacks and could be used to disrupt the AT-Field of an Angel.

All Units were equipped with a Progressive Knife (プログレッシブ・ナイフ) situated in the left shoulder pylon and were considered a basic weapon. These blades vibrated at an extremely high frequency increasing their cutting sharpness to the point that it could cut through the target at a molecular level.

Notes

  • Evangelions were created by Hideaki Anno where they featured in the setting of the Neon Genesis Evangelion universe.
  • In an interview, Anno talked how the Evangelion designs were inspired by Japanese Oni, "There's a monster in Japan called the Oni; it has two horns sticking out of its head and the overall image of the Eva is based on that. I also wanted to give the impression that beneath this ‘robot monster’ image is not so much a robot, but a giant human."
