Sarge Steel
Later on, he was arrested by the authorities when his gun that was a Luger had been used in the murder of various individuals in Europe. He came to be cleared temporarily of the deaths when he was approached by a blue-eyed blonde woman named Inga Ross. She had taken his gun and claimed that he would die unless he followed her instructions. The pair would take a plane to a remote country where they were forced to land leading to them being confronted by the mastermind of this plot who was a Nazi war criminal called Rudolf Wolk who was also known as the Smiling Skull. The man had been believed to had been dead but was quite active in Europe over the last few months where he came to learn that his gun had a twin which Wolk's organization had managed to determine was in Sarge Steel's possession. To draw Steel out, he kidnapped Inga Ross's father and forced her to have the American come abroad so that the Smiling Skull could take him hostage. (Sarge Steel v1 #3)

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Sargent Steel
Sarge Steel was later sent in to investigate the country of Bialya which had re-opened its borders and became a trendy vacation spot after months of a media blackout. During this time, he would encounters Captain Atom, Major Force and the second Rocket Red as various attacks rattled the country. (Captain Atom Annual v2 #2)
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was create with a different history of events.
He was put in charge of the investigation of an attack on Project Cadmus which was made by the Brother Eye satellite that had gone rogue. (OMAC v4 #2)

- Sarge Steel was created by Joe Gill and Dick Giordano where he made his first appearance in Sarge Steel v1 #1 (December, 1964).

Television
- In Naomi, a character named Commander Henry Steel was modelled on Sarge Steel in the setting of the CW live-action television series where he was portrayed by actor Brian Brightman. This version was a U.S. Military Commander based in Port Oswego who came to be in charge of the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force (UAPTF) which was a DOD and Naval Intelligence program made to to investigate other worldly threats such as aliens.

- In Batman and Harley Quinn, Sarge Steel appeared in the setting of the animated film where he was voiced by actor John DiMaggio. He was shown as being an A.R.G.U.S. commander who sought Batman's help to stop Poison Ivy and the Floronic Man.
