History

Hueco Mundo (虚圏 (ウェコムンド), Wekomundo; Spanish for "Hollow World", Japanese for "Hollow Sphere") was an other-dimensional realm that resided in-between the human world and that of the Soul Society with it being a dwelling place for Hollows.

At some point, a powerful Hollow named Baraggan Louisenbairn established his rule over Hueco Mundo and declared himself to be its god-king. He gathered an army under him and though some powerful Hollows operated independently his rule remained unchallenged. As complete ruler of this dimension, he suffered from boredom and looked to alleviate it by finding any form of grim entertainment for himself. This was until one day he was visited by a trio of shinigami headed by Sōsuke Aizen. He offered Baraggan greater power and in exchange he had to swear loyalty to Aizen. Though amused, Baraggan did not tolerate any challenge to his rule and attacked the interloper for his audacity. However, he was quick to learn that he was outmatched for Aizen and his abilities. He then came to accept becoming Aizen's subordinate where he was transformed into a powerful Arrancar and made to join the ranks of his Espada. Sometime afterwards, Aizen had his Arrancar followers seek out those Hollos of the Vasto Lordes power level in order to enlist them into their forces and transform them into Arrancar. Those that refused were to be destroyed in order to prevent any challenge against Aizen's rule. Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck and Nnoitra Gilga were dispatched on one such assignment where the latter was responsible for killing an entire village of weak Hollows.

Later on, Aizen came to enact his schemes leading to him claiming the Hōgyoku hidden within the body of Rukia Kuchiki. With his deception revealed, he along with his followers Gin Ichimaru and Kaname Tōsen escaped to Hueco Mundo. Whilst there, Aizen formally took control of the dimension and headed his Espada as they made preparations for the next stage of his plans.

After arriving in Hueco Mundo, Ichigo, Sado, and Uryū traverse the halls of an unknown structure

With preparations complete, Aizen assembled his Arrancar army as they journeyed to the world of the living in order to harvest the souls of Karakura Town. This saw him leaving Ulquiorra Cifer in charge of Los Noches until his return where he along with he remaining forces dealt with the intrusion into their realm by Ichigo Kurosaki and his friends.

Overview

In appearance, Hueco Mundo was a barren dimension that had an unchanging night which covered the sky and its landscape was one of an endless white desert that covered the ground. The landscape was dominated by tree-like objects that were not plants but rather composed of a quartz-like mineral. The landscape of Hueco Mundo is a seemingly never-ending white desert, with a multitude of dunes, littered with boulders. In Hueco Mundo, the moon is on the opposite lunar phase of that in the Human World. The vast desert seems to lack any bodies of water and contains rocky formations.

Its atmosphere was filled with a high concentration of Reishi thus allowing smaller Hollows to gain nourishment despite the lack of Human souls.

Locations within Hueco Mundo included:

  • Las Noches : noted for being the capital of Hueco Mundo.
  • Forest of Menos : a vast underground forest located beneath the sands dunes of Heuco Mundo with this area being the dwelling place of Menos-class Hollows. The giant mineral composed trees extended all the way through the top of the forest with these protruding as the small plants on the surface.
  • Negal Ruins :
  • Tres Cifras :

After taking control of Hueco Mundo, Aizen was noted to had an artificial canopy installed over Los Noches. This helped replicate the sky making it appear as if the sun was out and changed the setting from the eternal darkness that normally befell the region.

Travel to Hueco Mundo was made through the Garganta (黒腔 (ガルガンタ), Garuganta; Spanish for "Throat", Japanese for "Black Cavity") that was the void between worlds that allowed one to travel to the Human World and Soul Society.

Races native to Hueco Mundo include:

  • Hollows : were deceased souls who lost their hearts to despair or regret or remained in the Human World too long causing them to become monstrous creatures that hungered for the souls of the living. Hollows could come in a wide variety of forms and even animals could fall to this fate where they populated the afterlife of Hueco Mundo.
  • Arrancar : an evolved humanoid Hollow who cracked their mask and gained powers similar to a Shinigami as a result.

All Hollows were said to dwell in Hueco Mundo regardless of their shape, size, or power.

The law of Hueco Mundo was for the weak to be consumed by the strong in order to make them more powerful.

Hueco Mundo had no formal government where instead only the strongest ruled the realm. Military power was at one point concentrated in the ranks of the Espada that consisted of the strongest Arrancar.

Inhabitants

  • Baraggan Louisenbairn : a powerful male skeletal Hollow who once ruled Hueco Mundo as its god-king until he was deposed by Aizen who offered him greater power in exchange for his servitude. Baraggan was then transformed into an Arrancar where he joined the ranks of the Espada but longed to get revenge against Aizen.
  • Tier Harribel : a blonde haired female humanoid Hollow who took in other female Hollow under her where she refused to consume others as she believed that the strong should be able to stand on their own.
  • Sōsuke Aizen : a male Shinigami who was a former member of the Soul Society until he went rogue and established his powerbase in Las Noches with him creating the Espada.
  • Ulquiorra Cifer :
  • Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez : a powerful male Hollow who came to be turned into an Arrancar where he became a member of the Espada.
  • Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck : a green-haired Arrancar whose power led to her being recruited into the Espada until she was badly injured by Nnoitra Gilga leading to her regressing into a child-like state with no memory of her past.
  • Gin Ichimaru : a male Shinigami who was an ally of Sōsuke Aizen and joined him in Hueco Mundo.
  • Kaname Tōsen : a male Shinigami who was an ally of Sōsuke Aizen and joined him in Hueco Mundo.
  • Ashido Kanō : a male Shinigami who was with his unit in the Soul Society where they battled some Hollows that retreated through a Garganta with Ashido along with his allies in pursuit. This saw them in Hueco Mundo where Kanō's friends were all killed leaving Ashido alone within that dimension where he was forced to survive by himself in the Forest of Menos where he decided to slay Hollows in an attempt to stem the tide of attackers into the other worlds.
