History

Hollow (Japanese: 虚 (ホロウ), Hepburn: Horō) were the spirits of dead humans that became consumed by dark negative emotions that transformed them into monstrous entities that preyed on mankind. They consisted of the dead that did not cross over to the Soul Society but lingered on Earth with them residing in the dimension of Hueco Mundo (虚圏 (ウェコムンド), Wekomundo; Spanish for "Hollow World", Japanese for "Hollow Sphere").

In time, predation amongst the Hollows led to the emergence of a more humanoid-like member of their species called the Arrancar.

Opposing the Hollows were the shinigami of the Gotei 13 who were charged with cleansing these spirits so that their souls so that they could be brought to the Soul Society.

Meanwhile, the world of the living came to host the emergence of spiritually active humans called Quincy. They came to learn to harness their powers and wield it in battle which they used to slaughter Hollows. However, the Hollows were destroyed in the process and thus this practice would cause a destabilisation in the balance of souls between the worlds. If allowed to continue, this would cause the Soul Society and world of the living to collide with one another thus destroying them both. The Soul Society had attempted to convince the Quincy to stop their hunting of Hollows but the human tribe refused. Ultimately, this the Soul Society launching an attack against the Quincy around 200 years ago where they caused the near extinction of their foes.

Sōsuke Aizen later came to take control of Huenco Mundo where his power allowed him to dominate several of the Arrancar. This saw him re-arranging them into an organization of powerful warriors serving him that he called the Espada.

After Aizen's defeat, his forces retreated back to Hueco Mundo where Tier Harribel took control of them as she and her comrades sough to live in peace in their realm. Later on, they came under attack from the forces of Wandenreich who massacred many Hollows and Arrancar. This created an imbalance between the worlds leading to Mayuri Kurotsuchi ordering his Division to kill 28,000 Rukongai citizens to correct the balance of souls. Meanwhile, the Quincies of the Wandenreich continued their onslaught directly against Los Noches where their leader Yhwach defeated Tier Harribel and took her captive. His forces continued their occupation of Heuco Mundo where they slaughtered any Hollows whilst taking powerful Arrancar as captives. Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck and her friend Pesche Guatiche would journey to the world of the living to enlist his help against the Wandenreich.

Overview

In appearance, Hollows came a wide range of shapes and sizes with one distinctive feature being their masks that were formed from the hearts of those they had lost as humans.

Any spirit not guided to the Soul Society by a Shinigami via Konsō may eventually turn into a Hollow.

Their transformation saw them forming a mask over their faces which were made from the hearts they had lost when they were a Human.

When a soul became a Hollow, it was driven by an eternal and insatiable hunger to devour the souls of the living or the dead in order to fill the void caused by its descent.

A Hollow's spiritual power was said to be akin to being poison to a Quincy and would destroy their souls completely if it entered their bodies with them not even undergoing Hollowficaton .

A sub-group of Hollows were the Menos Grande (大虚 (メノスグランデ), menosu gurande; Spanish for "Less Big" or "Big Minus", Japanese for "Great Hollow") with these being divided into numerous types that included:

  • Gillian (最下大虚 (ギリアン), girian; Japanese for "Lowest Great Hollow") :
  • Adjuchas (中級大虚 (アジューカス), ajūkasu; Japanese for "Intermediate Great Hollow") :
  • Vasto Lorde (最上大虚 (ヴァストローデ), vasuto rōde; Japanese for "Highest Great Hollow") :

A new variation of the Hollow were the Arrancar (破面 (アランカル), Arankaru; Spanish for "To Tear Off", Japanese for "Ripped Mask") who were members of their kind that had managed to remove their mask and gained Shinigami-like powers.

Their home was the realm of Hueco Mundo (虚圏 (ウェコムンド), Wekomundo; Spanish for "Hollow World", Japanese for "Hollow Sphere") that was a dimension that lay in-between the Human World and Soul Society.
