Biography
Tenko Shimura (Japanese: 志し村むら転てん弧こ, Hepburn: Shimura Tenko?) was a male human born in Japan in the modern age following the rise of Quirks within humanity. He was born the son of Kotaro Shimura and Nao Shimura where he had an older sister named Hana Shimura. He lived in a house built by his father for the whole family, including his maternal grandparents Chizuo and Mako. Tenko did not seem to have a Quirk but he suffered from an unknown allergy that caused him to scratch his face frequently. When Tenko was a child, he had a fascination with heroes, but his father Kotaro, who hated everything to do with heroes, did not tolerate his acts and often scolded him. His mother and grandparents were always there for him and comforted him when he was sad, even though they hardly dared to oppose Kotaro. One day, when he was 5, Tenko caused some trouble while pretending to be a hero, so Kotaro took him outside as punishment. Nao begged her husband to not get violent but Tenko was left outside alone without food. Kotaro did not allow him to re-enter the house until he apologizes for disobeying his rule. When his wife and in-laws ask him if he was not being too hard on Tenko, he replied that he must respect his rule and forget the heroes. Nao noted how his allergies have gotten worse, while Kotaro mentions how he hasn’t manifested a Quirk yet, so he’s doing this to prevent Tenko from more suffering. Next day, Nao comforted Tenko, who continues to scratch his face, unaware of what was causing his allergies. His mother would like to know the reason that causes these symptoms and Tenko tells that it only happens when he is at home. His mother then asked him if he wanted to be a hero, Tenko replied yes and that he usually plays heroes with his friends. Tenko asked if his father hates him for wanting to be one. She said no, but his attitude was because he knows how difficult it is to be a hero. To try to cheer him up, his sister Hana took Tenko to their father's office and there she showed him a old photo of their father when he was a child with his mother. Hana told Tenko that their grandmother was a hero, and this revelation made Tenko very happy. Hana tried to support his dream, and even said that she wants to follow his dream herself. Later, Tenko was playing with Mon, the family dog, happy to know that there was a hero in his family. While playing, he suddenly felt an unpleasant twinge in his right hand, and unbeknownst to him, a part of the ball he tossed crumbled off. Unfortunately, he had no time to reflect what has happened to him because his tremendously angry father had discovered that his children broken into his office and peeped at the picture of his hero mother Nana.
Kotaro demanded to know who was responsible. Scared, Hana broke down into sobs and squealed, saying it was all Tenko's idea. This results in Kotaro beating his son, as his itching got worse. While punishing his son, Kotaro also shamed the heroes for protecting others only to hurt their families, telling his son that the woman in the picture is not his grandmother, but a demon that threw away her own child. Tenko's suffering was watched by his other relatives, who he begged for help but they could only witness it in horror. After the beating, Tenko was punished to stay in the backyard. He was crying inconsolably, hugging his dog Mon while continued anxiously scratching himself. While outside, Tenko confided in the family dog of how he couldn't take anymore of the abuse, and he hated everyone for leaving him to suffer. As he was clutching his dog, Tenko's Decay Quirk activated, causing the dog to crumble in his hands into a pile of blood. Seeing this caused Tenko to freak out in fear, trying to understand what had happened. Afterward, Hana came outside to apologize to Tenko for blaming him despite looking at the picture being her idea. Tenko tried to warn his sister of the danger, but the shock he suffered prevented him from speaking. Hana noticed something was wrong with Tenko and approached him but proceeded to run away in horror after seeing their dog's remains. Tenko tried asking for her help but as soon his hands touched Hana, he ended up disintegrating her by accident. Seeing his sister die in front of him further traumatizes Tenko and makes him vomit. Tenko's grandparents and mother ran outside to see what was happening, being horrified by what they saw. Thinking about how they never did anything to protect him from his father, Tenko feels only hatred for them. This caused that when he touched the ground, everything in the backyard began to decay. Despite his feelings, Tenko still begged them for help. As she starts to crumble away, Nao tried to reach out to him to comfort him, but her body fell apart before she could. Tenko's grandparents also ended up dying. Kotaro was alerted by the noise and discovered his son's deed. Standing horrified, Kotaro could only stare at the scene while Tenko begged him for help and the area around them is destroyed. Tenko ran to him for help but his scared father would grab a pair of pruning shears, which he then used to slash his son's face. This time, an enraged Tenko charged at his father with full intent to kill him and touched his face; ultimately the spreading decay ended up destroying the entire house. Tenko would relish in ending his father's abuse. After the deaths of his family, an orphaned Tenko was left to fend for himself on the streets. Tenko wandered around the city dazed and confused, mentally pleading for someone to help him. People who passed by took one look and pretended not to notice him, unnerved by his scary appearance. The only one who tried was an elderly lady, but Tenko’s appearance was disturbing enough to scare her away, saying that maybe a policeman or a hero would help him.
He eventually came to take the name of Tomura Shigaraki (死し柄が木らき弔とむら, Shigaraki Tomura?).
Alongside Kurogiri, he led a surprise League of Villains attack against U.A. where they had a Nomu accompany them. Using his ally's teleportation ability, they were able to infiltrate the training grounds of the school. This allowed them to take people hostage as they looked to eliminate any skilled heroes at the scene. Ultimately, Shigaraki had intended to draw out All-Might in the hope that Nomu would be able to defeat and kill the Number 1 Pro Hero. Arriving at the U.A., he was disappointed to find that his quarry was not present in the training course despite being listed as a teacher on the day. Instead, there were several instructors present among which included Eraser Head who attacked the villains in order to protect the students. This led to a fight with Tomura where Eraser Head managed to narrowly evade disintegration but ultimately was overwhelmed by Nomu. In the chaos, one of the students managed to escape in order to call for help whilst the others stood their ground against the villains. Shigaraki then decided to kill some of All-Might's students instead before more Pro Heroes arrived at the scene. Before this could happen, All-Might himself arrived at the scene ready to protect everyone. Tomura came to notice though that the Symbol of Peace was not as fast as he used to be in the past and unleashed Nomu against the Number 1 Pro Hero.
Kurogiri warped himself and Shigaraki to their hideout with Tomura lamenting the failure of his mission. He came to ask his master on why his plan had failed to which All For One that the League of Villains was not prepared and had underestimated their foes at U.A. High. He then told All For One about a U.A. student with speed like All-Might though his master told Tomura to calm down and to gather villains to his cause as next time he would show the world the horror of his existence.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Tomura Shigaraki was a slim human male with deathly pale skin, tinged yellow, and wrinkled a great deal around his eyes. He was eventually given the name Tomura Shigaraki (死し柄が木らき弔とむら, Shigaraki Tomura?) by All For One who explained that 'Tomura' came from the word 'Tomurau' which meant 'to mourn' which signified the sadness that came with death and parting whilst 'Shigaraki' was All For One's real last name. As a rising supervillain, he came to be known by the epithet of the Symbol of Fear (恐怖の象徴 Kyōfu no Shōchō?).
Originally, he felt great love for his family and expressed remorse for accidentally killing of them upon losing control of his Quirk. This led to him wearing the severed hands of his family as they were the only remnants of his lost loved ones. Tomura had said that wearing the hands made him feel sick yet also kept him calm. The trauma he experienced at their deaths caused him to lose his memories of them for a time where he would only have occasional flashbacks of his family.
Such was the weight on his heart that he felt that it would never go away. Thus, he cared little if hero society collapsed or if he rose to rule the underworld. By the end, Shigaraki simply hated everything as he found that every living thing irritated him. It was this reason that he came to consider destroying everything around him.
He cared nothing about the lives of others and had no qualms about performing evil deeds like murdering innocent people. Unlike his mentor, Tomura lacked any subtlety with him instead having a preference to eliminate problems through force.
Shigaraki was unable to cope with his own feelings where instead he lashed out and abused both others or himself. Initially, he was shown to be a very irritable person but learnt to be more patient and self-controlled over time after All For One's arrest.
Tomura was proud of the League of Villains where he wanted to prove that his organization had the necessary power to shake society and took pleasure in mocking those standing in his way.
Though distant to his allies, he was shown to care about them to a certain degree. This was shown in him prioritizing their comfort once he obtained the necessary finances. In addition, he was angered when they were injured or killed by others such as when Magne was killed by Overhaul who also destroyed one of Compress's arms.
At first, he lacked any defined goals as he simply caused destruction just for the sake of it and felt directionless about the League's path forward after Stain's arrest. It was only after a fateful meeting with Izuku Midoriya in a mall when he developed an epiphany and became aware of his true convictions which was to crumble society through All Might's death.
Tenko Shimura was the son of Kotaro Shimura (志し村むら弧こ太た朗ろう Shimura Kotarō?) and his wife Nao Shimura (志し村むら直なお Shimura Nao?). He also had an older sister who was named Nao Shimura (志し村むら直なお Shimura Nao?).
He was the grandson of Nana Shimura (志し村むら菜な奈な Shimura Nana?) who was once a wielder of the One For All Quirk and had been a Pro-Hero.
Powers and abilities
Shigaraki was a Quirk (個こ性せい Kosei?, lit. "Individuality") user where his took the form of Decay (崩ほう壊かい Hōkai?) that allowed him to disintegrate whatever he touched with all five fingers. The power worked on any object touched by him whether it was organic or not. Once activated, the disintegration spread quickly and spread throughout the entire form of the target. A means of stopping it was by amputating the affected decaying part thus stopping the disintegration from spreading throughout the target.
In his battle against Re-Destro, Tomura experienced a reawakening that bolstered the effectiveness of his Quirk. This allowed him to wither away anything he touched without using all five fingers where he could partially damage a person with only a few of his digits. However, the spread of the decay was not as fast when compared to him using all five fingers and its effects were not as strong. In addition, the power of his Quirk had increased to much greater level where he was able to use it to nearly destroy an entire city where everything was reduced to dust using his own good hand.
After taking over the Paranormal Liberation Front and gaining Gigantomachia's respect, Tomura came to prove himself to Kyudai Garaki who agreed to help the young villain. This led to him performing body modification surgery on Shigaraki in order to increase his power.
He came to be the leader of the League of Villains (敵ヴィラン連れん合ごう, Viran Rengō?) that had been founded by his master All For One.
