History

The Peacekeepers were created by the Eidelon civilization 12,000 cycles before modern events. They were taken from a primitive backwater planet on the outer spiral arm of the galaxy where they were prehistoric humanoids that were re-engineered to become acolytes to the Eidelons. The task of these Sebaceans was to help maintain the peace and they were genetically altered to serve their task. However, once the Eidelons disappeared from the galactic arena, the Sebaceans and the Peacekeepers began to become a gradually more militaristic organization that sought to enforce the peace through force rather then maintain it due to the lack of the negotiation abilities of the Eidelons. (Farscape: Peacekeeper Wars) The last known noble act of the Peacekeepers was roughly 500 cycles ago when a detachment of soldiers were deployed to protect unarmed nurses and children on the planet Jocacea. As time went on, the Peacekeepers became more ruthless and almost had a mercenary quality among its soldiers. (Farscape: ...Different Destinations)

In order to keep watch over the Sebacean Breakaway Colonies, the Peacekeeper Special Directorate dispatched a Disruptor by the name of Jenavian Charto to the Royal Planet where she went undercover as a consort to Prince Clavor. This was because Clavor had secured an alliance with a Scarran by the name of Cargn in order to ascend to rule the throne. As such, Jena was charged with eliminating Clavor if he became a threat by siding his world with the Scarran Imperium whilst at the same time masquerading as a vain consort to him. She saved the life of John Crichton in the mistaken belief that he was sent by the Peacekeepers on an important mission on the planet. (Episode: Look at the Princess - I Do, I Think) Prince Clavor was ultimately killed by Cargn and Jena pretended to mourn her consort. (Episode: Look at the Princess - The Maltese Crichton)

In an effort to garner a possible peace, Commandant Grayza launched a diplomatic initiative to the Scarran Empire at a remote commerce planet with the intention of creating a secret conference. She along with Captain Braca and a group of commando escorts met with War Minister Ahkna along with her guard in order to discuss the terms of the peace. The terms included ceding the entirety of the Luxan Territories to the Scarrans in exchange for them abandoning any claim to the Uncharted Territories. This was met with some debate as the War Minister believed it was not an equivatable exchange though the Commandant highlighted the fact that the Luxan worlds were rich in resources whilst the Uncharted Territories had little to offer the Scarran Imperium. When asked why they were abandoning their Luxan allies, Grayza commented that the species were warriors and not diplomats which meant they were expendable. However, the Scarrans attempted to steer the talks to disarmament of the supposed wormhole weaposn the Peacekeepers possessed which Grayza did not discuss further. Despite the tensions involved, the treaty was signed by both sides but the Scarrans killed Grayza's protectors and took both her as well as Captain Braca hostage in order to be interrogated. Their hostages were to be transported to the Scarran fortress base of Katratzi but they were saved by the intervention of Aeryn Sun. (Episode: Bringing Home the Beacon)

Afterwards, the Commandant made a second diplomatic ploy in order to bring about a peace which involved taking her Command Carrier to the Scarran base of Katratzi in order to speak to Emperor Staleek himself. Once there, she claimed that she desired a peace but that the Peacekeepers were building more wormhole weapons in case of war. However, the discussions were interrupted by the arrival of John Crichton who claimed he was selling his wormhole knowledge to the highest bidder. Grayza attempted to get his aid but he refused and stalled the negotiations. (Episode: We're So Screwed - Hot to Katratzi) This ultimately saw the Peacekeepers leaving the diplomatic conference despite Grayza's attempts at launching a suicidal attack at Katratzi. (Episode: We're So Screwed - La Bomba) When the Scarrans learnt that Earth was capable of growing the Crystherium plant and that a wormhole linked their space to that planet - they attempted to launch an invasion of that defenseless world. This saw Scorpius offering to make an alliance which would see the Peacekeepers protect Earth from harm but Crichton refused and instead used his knowledge to destroy the wormhole. (Episode: Bad Timing)

Ultimately, the possible Peacekeeper-Scarran War erupted when Scorpius took a fleet of Peacekeeper vessels and assaulted a Scarran armada that was waiting at a buildup point for a possible invasion. His actions ultimately resulted in a pre-mature start to hostilities which greatly angered the Grand Chancellor though Scorpius stated that by striking now, they had given the Peacekeepers the chance of a possible victory. This brought about the war and just as the projections had forseen, the Peacekeepers began to lose star system after star system. As the Peacekeepers were losing, Grand Chancellor Maryk attempted to surrender to the Scarrans but was poisoned by Commandant Grayza who took charge of the military offensive against the enemy. They may have ultimately faced defeat had not John Crichton used the Ancients knowledge of wormhole technology to create a universe destroying reality rift that threatened to destroy everything in its path. However, he managed to stop it which forced the Scarrans and Peacekeepers to make peace. (Farscape: Peacekeeper Wars)

Overview

Following the loss of the Eidelons, the Peacekeepers were led by members who held the position of Grand Chancellor. (Farscape: Peacekeeper Wars) Amongst the leadership body was Peacekeeper High Command which established set rules and guidelines that needed to be followed. (Episode: Premiere)

The nature of the command structure meant that deals were capable of being negotiating by one officer but if he fell in favor, his superiors were able to override any agreements. However, an executive order if signed would stand no matter if an officer was dishonored. (Episode: Into the Lion's Den - Wolf in Sheep's Clothing) A Priority Red One mission was capable of being announced by officers to indicate the high degree of importance of their mission and at times allowed them to commandeer Peacekeeper vessels. (Episode: A Bug's Life) Officers and soldiers were given identchips with some possessing maximum security clearance. (Episode: Nerve)

A covert ops division within the Peacekeepers was the Special Directorate that was responsible for sending intelligence agents known as Disruptors on assignments. This could involve undercover work and masquerading as a member of a target world in order to keep constant watch over potential threats and, if need be, eliminate them. (Episode: Look at the Princess - I Do, I Think) When intending to recover items of importance or lost technology; the Peacekeepers often dispatched Retrieval Squads. (Episode: Thanks for Sharing) The crews of Marauders often consisted of elite commando units who often followed a very strict search pattern known as a crosshatch star pattern which was clean, efficient and prevented any prey from escaping unless they were lucky. (Episode: Exodus from Genesis) Not all members of the Peacekeepers served as soldiers as some were trained for technical roles and maintenance where they were often called Techs. (Episode: PK Tech Girl)

Elements of their training included the obstacle test. Among the tactics that they used and manevuers was advance pattern decca. (Episode: Exodus from Genesis)

Entry into the ranks of the Peacekeepers required the adherence to a number of purity regulations that needed to be complied with before acceptance of a candidate. However, any exemplary service provided by an individual as well as sponsorship by a Peacekeeper allowed such a candidate to be made exempt of all such purity regulations. (Episode: Incubation) Amongst the Peacekeepers, it was deemed that any of their members that spent excessive time amongst their enemies were believed to be irreversibly contaminated where they suffered the penalty of death or exile which was considered even worse (Episode: PK Tech Girl) These standards were set down by Peacekeeper High Command which set down clear parameters in regards to contact with unclassified lifeforms. If it was believed that an officer exceeded those levels, then typical punishment meant death. (Episode: Premieres) Each Sebecean Peacekeeper were battle-strengthened in order to better resist the effects of heat delirium to a better level when compared to others of their kind. (Episode: Prayer) In fact, they were considered bred for service and duty. (Episode: Premiere) This meant that their soldiers considered any showing of pain to be a sign of weakness which was frowned on. (Episode: PK Tech Girl) In fact, they believed their own ranks to be made up of members who were both ruthless yet efficient and saw other species as being lesser lifeforms. (Episode: Exodus from Genesis)

Members were often identified as an Officer of the Fleet of the Peacekeeper Interplanetary Service. (Episode: We're So Screwed - La Bomba) Skilled soldiers were often referred to as Special Peacekeeper Commandos that were often attached to various military units such as Pleisar Regiment that was a part of Icarion Company. (Episode: Premiere)

In terms of territory, the Uncharted Territories was considered outside the jurisdiction of the Peacekeepers. (Episode: Premiere)

Technology

Technologically, the Peacekeepers were an advanced civilization with space capable vessels ranging from small fighter-like Prowlers to massive space going starships such as Peacekeeper Command Carriers. In terms of surveillance and data gathering, they were known to make use of recon satellites which they used for information gathering. (Episode: Premiere) A scout ship often used consisted of Marauders that were manned by five crewmembers with the highest level of training with their success measured by body count. Their highest cruising speed was hetch 7. (Episode: Exodus from Genesis)

Their ground equipment included the use of energy based rifle weapons. (Episode: Exodus from Genesis) Furthermore, they made use of a headband device that was light and wrapped around the head with an emitter pointing towards the forehead which allowed it to beam images directly into the brain. This effectively served as their version of a binocular and provided them long range sight for analysis. (Episode: Throne for a Loss)

Standard weapons used by peacekeepers are pulse weapons. Pulse weapons operate by releasing a drop of Chakan oil, a dense and highly volatile compound, into the weapon's 'pulse chamber'. The ordnance was then vaporized and excited to a high-energy plasma state by powerful, rapid-pulsing beam of laser-light and higher-frequency electromagnetic energies. The chamber itself is magnetically shielded, so the beams remain within the plasma cloud, which itself amplifies the power of the EM pulse due to properties of the chakan oil. The magnetic field is also present in the weapon's barrel, which accelerates the excited plasma cloud to an unknown velocity. The final result is a discharge of plasma bolts similar to a bullets being firing except with no shell casings.

Among the weapons used by them included:

  • Pistols :
    • Mini Pistol : A small sidearm carried by Peacekeeper infantry, the Mini Pistol is a miniaturized version of the Peacekeeper Pulse Pistol. Meant for easy concealment, it is no larger than the palm of the hand. It does not have an ammo cartridge, but a reservoir of Chakan Oil that must be refilled. The number of shots possible before a refill is unknown. The user is often seen licking the underside of the cartridge, possibly because the taste indicates the amount of oil inside where it shot yellow pulse blasts.
    • Pulse pistol : standard issue Peacekeeper sidearm, 7 inches in length, 6 inches in height. It fires small bolts of red plasma able to kill most species, but will not penetrate Scarran hide. The pistol can be set to stun, kill, or higher, but the standard setting used by most is kill. For ammunition, it uses Chakan oil cartridges that are loaded into the grip. The maximum number of shots per cartridge is 500, although Crichton's comments in one episode indicate that Winona (his personal pulse pistol) can fire 600 and possibly others can as well. The pistol can be set to overload, causing an explosion proportional to the amount of Chakan oil remaining. There is a mount on the left side, where a laser sight can be attached.

Their medical technology also advanced to the point that they created a new way of healing damages to the paraphoral nerve with medics beign able to synthesize the appropriate tissue for any Sebacean that suffered from such a wound. (Episode: Nerve) They also developed the means to forcibly enslave Leviathans to their command by fitting them with control collars. These were large pieces of metallic equipment that encircled the front of the Leviathan and restricted their actions. (Episode: Premiere) They also installed paddac beacons within certain Leviathans which constantly broadcasted until they received a counter signal from the control collar. This meant that should the control collar ever be disabled, the beacon would continue transmitting and alert the nearest Peacekeeper patrol. The devices were often situated in the primary neural nexus to prevent it from being easily removed and it was also equipped with a weapon designed to destroy DRDs that attempted to get near it. (Episode: I, ET)
