Biography
Muruta Azrael (Japanese: ムルタ・アズラエル, Hepburn: Muruta Azuraeru) was a male human who lived on Earth during the Cosmic Era. As a child, he was bullied by Coordinator children who decided to flaunt their abilities towards the Natural. He came to be head of Blue Cosmos that was a human supremacist organization that opposed the genetically engineered Coordinators.
Following the Tragedy of Copernicus and the declaration of war by the Earth Alliance to the PLANTs, Azrael arranged for Blue Cosmos members to supply the Agamemnon-class vessel Roosevelt with nuclear missiles, prior to its deployment to the Junius colonies for a show of force. On route, Azrael gave the order to fire a nuclear missile at Junius Seven, causing the Bloody Valentine Incident.
After receiving information from Rau Le Creuset on the true target of Operation Spitbreak, he and his subordinates arrange to place a Cyclops system beneath the JOSH-A Alaska base. They also arrange to leave Eurasian Federation troops for base "defense", while the Atlantic Federation personnel are transferred to Panama. The personnel were left for "defense" to convince ZAFT forces to move close to the base so they will be destroyed by the Cyclops system, crippling ZAFT's fighting strength. This destruction of Eurasian Federation troops also allows Blue Cosmos and the Atlantic Federation (both of which are in Azrael's pocket) to dominate the Earth Alliance.
Azrael uses his connections within the Atlantic Federation to "request" the Orb Union for use of their mass driver, since it is the only remaining one not under ZAFT's control. He leads the attack on the Orb Union when Uzumi Nara Athha, as he had hoped, refuses their "offer." In the attack, he uses the new GAT-X131 Calamity, GAT-X252 Forbidden and GAT-X370 Raider, as well as massive numbers of the mass-produced GAT-01 Strike Dagger. Despite the interference of the ZGMF-X10A Freedom and ZGMF-X09A Justice units, Azrael's forces overwhelm the defenses. Uzumi Nara Athha destroys the mass driver to prevent the Earth Alliance from using it, giving Azrael nothing but a Pyrrhic victory.
Azrael soon took an interest in the Freedom and Justice Gundams, suspecting that they ran on nuclear energy when he notices that the power they displayed was greater than other mobile suits. After the Earth Alliance recaptured the mass driver at Victoria Base, Azrael decided to go into space on board the Dominion with his three Biological CPU pilots to capture either the Freedom or Justice for the Earth Alliance. He met with the Dominion's captain, Natarle Badgiruel, who was previously the XO of the rogue Archangel. Azrael saw that her familiarity with the ship would enable them to destroy the Archangel. They attacked the Archangel at the Battle of Mendel, but were driven back by the two Gundams and the arrival of the Kusanagi.
After the Earth Alliance recaptures the mass driver at Victoria, Azrael decides to go into space on board the Dominion with the three Biological CPU pilots. He planned to capture the Freedom and/or the Justice for the Earth Alliance. They attack the Archangel, but are driven back by the Freedom and Justice units and the appearance of the Kusanagi and Eternal.
Azrael takes interest in a life pod Le Creuset sent to the Earth Alliance after its occupant, Flay Allster, mentions that she had the "key" which would end the war. After the Calamity retrieves the pod, Azrael obtains the N-Jammer Canceller technology. He convinces top Earth Alliance officials to use nuclear weapons with N-Jammer Cancellers to end the war by eradicating all of the Coordinaters instead of using the technology to solve the Earth's energy crisis. As the war enters its final stages, Azrael becomes increasingly desperate to accomplish his goal of genocide, especially after witnessing the destructive power of GENESIS and gives the order to launch nuclear missiles at the PLANTs to inflict maximum damage to eliminate the threat to Earth. When Natarle Badgiruel objects to his orders, he pulls a gun on her, frightening the other Dominion crew members into submission. However, Flay Allster alerts the Archangel of the impending danger as the Dominion prepares to fire on it. When Azrael prepares to shoot Flay, Natarle intervenes, restraining him and ordering the rest of the crew to abandon ship. Azrael shoots Natarle during the struggle and then prepares to destroy the Archangel himself. When he fires the "Lohengrin", however, GAT-X105 Strike pilot Mu La Flaga takes the full force of the blast and saves the Archangel; and seemingly dies. In response, the Archangel destroys the Dominion with its own Lohengrin, killing Azrael and Captain Badgiruel in the process.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Muruta Azrael was an adult male human with blond hair, blue eyes and pale skin. His normal attire consists of a light blue suit with a purple shirt and a lavender tie.
On the surface, Azrael appeared to be a pleasant and calm individual. However, in reality, he was a man willing to go to any lengths to destroy all Coordinators.
He is the leader of the Blue Cosmos terrorist organization, which feels that all nations of Earth, neutral or not, should fight against humanity's "enemies", the Coordinators, for the sake of a "blue and pure world" - that is, a world without Coordinators, and has no problems with killing masses of ordinary humans. He holds immense power within the Atlantic Federation due to his position as director of the Atlantic National Defense Conglomerate, the Alliance military's primary source of arms and munitions.
Muruta's desire to eliminate Coordinators can cause him to act crazed and malicious, even to his allies. For example, during the Second Battle of Jachin Due, Azrael's maniacal obsession led him to disregard the threat of GENESIS in favor of destroying the PLANT Colonies to cause as many civilian causalities as possible, to which after she turned on him, Natarle Badgiruel commented that Azrael was a "monster". Furthermore, he holds little regard for his subordinates, especially the three Biological CPUs who served under him, as evidenced during the Battle of Mendel, when he told Natarle Badgiruel that since their mobile suits are equipped with Trans-Phase armor, he didn't care if they were hit by friendly fire.
One of his relatives was Bruno Azrael was a member of Logos.
Powers and abilities
Azrael possesses of a high level of charisma, able to convince the upper leadership of the Earth Alliance to disregard the sovereignty of Orb Union to seize its mass driver or to use Neutron Jammer Canceller technology to create nuclear weapons instead of solving Earth's energy crisis.
