Gol D. Ace (Japanese: ゴール・D・エース, Hepburn: Gōru D. Ēsu?) was a male human born as the son of the legendary pirate king Gold D. Roger and his lover Portgas D. Rouge. He had been gestating in his mothers womb for 5 months when his father was executed by the Marines. To protect her son, Rouge kept the unborn child within her for another 15 months. Thus, he was ultimately born a year and three months after Roger's death on Baterilla in the South Blue. However, the exertion involved in giving birth to her son ultimately caused Rouge to die immediately afterwards. Ace was then placed under the custody of Marine Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp who had made a promise to the Pirate King to care for his son. Garp though could not look after the child directly but instead left him in the care of Curly Dadan and the Dadan Family on Mt. Colubo on Dawn Island. Whilst growing up, Ace encountered many people who showed an open hatred of Gold D. Roger and any offspring he might have had in his life which left the boy feeling alone and worthless as a result. At one point, the child nearly beat someone to death over such views which shocked Dadan. One day, Garp came to visit which was when Ace asked if she should have been born at all if everyone hated him. The Marine Vice Admiral responded though that he could only find his answer by living his life. Later, Ace came to meet another boy his age named Sabo at Gray Terminal on the island where he claimed to be from the city. Whilst bonding as friends, the two shared a dream of becoming pirates. To achieve that goal, they began stealing money and treasure from people on the island in preparation for the day they could set off to sea.

When he was 10 years hold, Ace returned home after hunting a buffalo when Garp visited the island alongside his grandon Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy was set to begin living on the island as well and to be cared for by Dadan in the process. Upon seeing Luffy, Ace simply spat on the younger boy and met him with hostility. Afterwards, the family ate the buffalo that Ace had caught though he simply ran off but Luffy chased after him as he wanted to be friends. Ace though sent a tree rolling at Luffy but despite that the grandson continued chasing after the older boy. Ultimately, Ace hit Luffy and sent him plummeting into a chasm. It took Luffy a week to return home but he continued chasing Ace over the course of the next 3 months, not giving up even though the older boy threw everything he could to dissuade any pursuit. One day, Ace went to meet Sabo one day to count and compare the treasure they had managed to gathered at that point. Unknown to them, Luffy had followed Ace having made his way to Gray Terminal and called out to them. After seeing that Luffy knew of their dream, the two boys had the younger kid tied up where they decided to kill him but found themselves unable to do so. At that point, Porchemy of the Bluejam Pirates arrived after tracking Ace who had stolen his money. Porchemy captured Luffy and much to Ace's horror the younger boy called out to him. To find his quarry, Porchemy took Luffy away thus forcing Ace and Sabo to work to move their treasure to another location. When Sabo returned, he revealed that Luffy had not given away Ace's location much to the older boy's shock. He and Sabo then broke into the Bluejam Pirates hideout to rescue Luffy. However, they were ambushed by Porchemy who grabbed Ace but Sabo freed him before rescuing Luffy. Both Ace and Sabo then stayed behind to fight Porchemy where they defeated him. In the aftermath, Ace asked Luffy when he risked death rather than reveal his location. Luffy then revealed that Ace was the only person he had in the world and thus would not betray him. Seeing Luffy's actions made Ace re-evaluate the younger boy and the trio decided that they would become well-known pirates on Gray Terminal. Ace and Luffy returned home where they brought Sabo into the Dadan Family's household to stay with them whenever he wanted to do so.

Ace left Fuusha Village three years before Luffy where he came to command the Second Division of Whitebeard's fleet.

Ace came to visit Drum Island and left a message for Luffy to meet him in 10 days in the city of Nanohana at Arabasta. He would later arrive in Arabasta where he had been sleeping in the Spice Bean restaurant. The other patrons thought that he had dropped dead from eating a Desert Strawberry. As Ace finished his meal, he was spotted by Smoker, who attempted to arrest him. However, shortly before he and Smoker began to fight, both men were sent flying into the wall behind them by Luffy's sudden entrance. After picking himself up, Ace spotted Luffy eating, only to be knocked down by Smoker, who then attempted to arrest Luffy. After Luffy dashed out of the restaurant with Smoker in hot pursuit, Ace caught up with Luffy in time to save him from being arrested. His interference allowed Luffy to escape while he dealt with Smoker himself. After throwing the Marines off his trail, Ace caught up with Luffy on the Going Merry to offer him a chance to join Whitebeard, which Luffy refused. Ace later hopped on Buggy's ship for food and promised to show him the way to Luffy. After parting ways with Buggy's crew, he infiltrated a Marine base to deliver a letter to the parents of a milk maiden who saved his life. Despite being exposed, Ace was able to escape with vital information on Blackbeard that he took from the Marines. He also successfully delivered the letter, which indirectly led the parents to reunite with their daughter.

Afterwards, he would continue his search until Ace finally found and confronted Blackbeard and his crew on Banaro Island. He and Blackbeard exchanged a few words before Blackbeard offered him the chance to join his crew and help him become Pirate King. However, when Blackbeard revealed that he was intending to go to Water 7 and capture Luffy, Ace got angrier as he refused, revealing his relationship with Luffy. Van Augur then shot at him, but Ace had the bullets pass through him before retaliating with fire bullets. Jesus Burgess threw part of a hotel at him, but Ace demolished it with a pillar of fire before attacking the two of them and Blackbeard with Hiken. Blackbeard admitted that he had killed Thatch, revealing that he had done it to claim the Yami Yami no Mi. Ace watched as Blackbeard became darkness and pulled the entire town into a black hole before releasing it as wreckage, but he immediately unleashed several small fiery explosions that injured Blackbeard due to his fruit amplifying damage rather than bypassing it. However, Blackbeard used his darkness to pull Ace toward him and nullify his Devil Fruit powers, allowing Blackbeard to punch Ace. Ace was pulled in again by Blackbeard's darkness but managed to hit Blackbeard with an attack before Blackbeard broke his neck. As the two continued to clash, Blackbeard began to physically overwhelm Ace and once again offered him the chance to join his crew. Ace refused again and brought out a massive fireball as he engaged in a massive final clash with Blackbeard's darkness.

Overview

Personality and attributes

To hide his identity, he came to be known as Portgas D. Ace (ポートガス・D・エース, Pōtogasu Dī Ēsu) to prevent others from knowing his parentage. After gaining Devil Fruit powers, he quickly came to gain a reputation as Fire Fist Ace (火拳のエース, Hiken no Ēsu).

Ace was more intelligent, polite, and generally more bearable than his ebullient younger brother. However, he does have the idiotic side that all D's seem to share. He has a close relationship with Luffy, as shown when he asks the Straw Hats to keep an eye on his little brother.

He was shown as being quite impulsive, much like his younger brother, as he too would make hasty decisions and, in some cases, neglect listening to reason. This was shown that shortly prior to setting out to hunt Blackbeard for killing Thatch. Whitebeard insisted that Ace should not to go after him, yet Ace, despite his immense loyalty and respect for his captain, ignored his warnings and went off to find his former subordinate. Another, albeit more humorous example, was in his mini-story, where during his hunt for Blackbeard, he mistook a man named Dr. Blackbeard for his target, due to coincidentally having a similar name and appearance to Teach. Rather than check to see if he found the man he was looking for, Ace jumped to conclusions too soon and attacked the doctor on sight. It was by then Ace realized too late that he had the wrong man, which got him into a lot of trouble with the villagers.

Ace had a tendency to never back down from a fight, saying that he would never run once facing an enemy. Also like his father and brother, Ace was confident and fearless when confronting his opponents even when they were extremely powerful people such as Whitebeard or admirals like Aokiji or Akainu, though like Luffy, he could also underestimate his opponents. When Blackbeard demonstrated the power of the Yami Yami no Mi, Ace was unfazed, not viewing it as a threat to himself and only showed shock and fear when Teach used his power to grab him and cancel his Devil Fruit powers. He also tried to kill Whitebeard at least a hundred times despite the massive difference in strength between them and each of his attempts failing miserably. Because of this, some people believed that Ace had a death wish, but in truth, he wanted to prevent the people he cared for from getting hurt. Dadan stated that he inherited this tendency from his father despite loathing him. While Ace emerged victorious over enemies he refused to run from, such as Porchemy and Bluejam, his stubbornness hurt him on a number of occasions, particularly when he refused to back down against Blackbeard or Admiral Akainu.

Portgas D. Ace was the son of the legendary pirate king Gold D. Roger (ゴール・Dディー・ロジャー, Gōru Dī Rojā) and his lover Portgas D. Rouge (ポートガス・Dディー・ルージュ, Pōtogasu Dī Rūju).

Ace and Luffy bear a family resemblance; however Ace is more muscular and sports childish-looking freckles. Like other members of his family, Ace is apparently narcoleptic and falls asleep without warning, making passers-by wonder whether he has dropped dead. Ace's most recognizable features are his tattoos. His back bears the Whitebeard symbol–a skull with a white mustache superimposed over a manji.

Although Red-Haired Shanks has not been depicted as having a close relationship with Ace, he seems deeply concerned by Ace's hunt for Blackbeard. His concern even led him to consider fighting Whitebeard to get Ace to stop.

Ace's dream is to make Whitebeard the Pirate King, as he declares before his desperate final attack against Blackbeard.

Ace is constantly in dire financial straits; this has become a literal running joke, as he often pulls a dine and dash.

Powers and abilities

Portgas D. Ace was born an ordinary human being with no inherent special powers. Ace possessed immense physical strength and endurance which he attained from the extremely rigorous training in the harsh environment of Mt. Colubo that consisted of him hunting and fighting wild beasts since childhood and traveling in precarious trap-filled locations. His incredible physical prowess was supplemented by his extraordinary fighting skills. Even in his early childhood, he was able to beat some local thugs who spoke ill of his father 'half to death' and during his first meeting with Luffy, he was also shown sitting on top of a huge bull he killed with his staff. As a child, he could also easily break a giant tree with a single kick. In his childhood, he was able to beat his brother Luffy in every fight they had, despite Luffy having the power of a Devil Fruit already. Van Augur had noted that Ace's basic combat skills were quite formidable even without his Devil Fruit powers.

Later on, Ace came to eat the one of the Devil Fruits (悪魔の実, Akuma no Mi) with this being the Mera Mera no Mi (メラメラの実, Flare Flare Fruit) which was a a Logia elemental type fruit. As a result, it was responsible for giving him fire manipulation abilities and his reputation as "Fire Fist Ace". Ace primarily used his flames for a wide variety of offenses. He could shoot fire bullets and spears, release powerful fire cannons, unleash massive waves of fire, and create fire balls, both a single large one for large-scale destruction and multiple small ones that could explode. His signature attack was transforming his fist into fire and sending it forward as it greatly increased in size. It allowed him to create, control, and transform his body into fire. He could create and unleash massive amounts of fire for large-scale damage, as well as utilize small precision attacks. Later, after his death, it was revealed that Ace's burning fists also had the power to annihilate entire cities. Ace was the only person to fight toe-to-toe with Smoker. Luffy was almost captured by Smoker in Loguetown and has since resorted to running away from the man instead of fighting. His flames could also be used defensively, he could create a massive wall of flames to block his opponents, and the heat of his flames could deter his opponents from attacking him for fear of getting burned. Ace also had practical uses for his Devil Fruit powers; he would heat up any fish he would find in the seas for his crew when they had no food to eat and he was able to traverse the seas in a one-man boat that was specifically designed for him and propelled with flames from his feet.

With his abilities, Ace came to display his immense power by destroying a handful of Baroque Works ships with ease and harming Blackbeard during their encounter. Much like the other D's, Ace seemed fearless, proven as he does not seem to mind his inability to swim, despite the risk that destroying the Billions' ships could have left him in the ocean. This is a similar situation Luffy was in when fighting Don Krieg, and Blackbeard is in by sailing on his raft (assuming that he still does sail on a raft), even without his Devil Fruit powers.

Ace travels the Grand Line on a specially constructed boat propelled by his Mera Mera abilities.

As commander of the 2nd division of the Whitebeard Pirates, Ace had authority over the lower-ranking subordinates. In addition, as one of the top commanders of the Whitebeard Pirates, he was one of the strongest and most highly-regarded pirates on board under Whitebeard himself. At one point, while being captain of the Spade Pirates, he was even asked to join the Seven Warlords of the Sea but refused. Ace was strong enough to be acknowledged by the Emperors Shanks and Blackbeard, with the former saying he had earned his spot as Whitebeard's 2nd division commander and the latter wishing Ace had joined his crew and emphasizing how his own formidable crew was nowhere near strong enough to combat Ace at the time, speaking volumes about Ace's strength.
