Biography
Pre-Crisis
Amazo was an immensely powerful android created by the scientist Professor Ivo with the intention of aiding in the conquest of the planet. Amazo was designed with absorption cells that enabled him to absorb the powers of any superhuman beings around him. Secretly, the android came to copy the abilities of the entire Justice League of America whereupon he was dispatched to help his creator in achieving immortality. (The Brave and the Bold v1 #30)
The deactivated body of Amazo was placed in the Hall of Souvenirs at the Justice League's headquarters. (Justice League of America v1 #27)
T. O. Morrow came to reactivate the Amazo android along with using weapons from defeated supervillains against the Justice League. (Justice League of America v1 #65)
After losing their powers, the Justice League came to lack their abilities with the Atom proposing a solution. Ray Palmer suggested they repurpose Amazo and readjust his android structure to draw back the missing molecules containing the League's powers like a magnet. (Justice League of America v1 #112)
Post-Crisis
Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Amazo was originally designed to steal the powers of the original Justice League of America, and use them both to defeat the heroes and to create a formula to make Ivo immortal. He was narrowly defeated by the League, only because he had their weaknesses as well. However, the original was able to make Ivo immortal, and the mad scientist created a succession of further Amazos to battle the various incarnations of the Justice League.
The incarnation that appeared the most sought only his electronic "sleep," and grew to hate his creator for repeatedly awakening him. Otherwise, he had no real motivations besides those programmed into him. This version went in and out of storage, and was eventually reconstructed to train the Conglomerate in a fearsome new form.
One of the most powerful models was an Amazo capable of assuming the powers of any version of the League he might encounter, even beyond the normal members of the JLA. It was defeated when Superman disbanded the JLA in his presence, causing that Amazo's programming to render it powerless.
The most recent Amazo, however, was the original, resurrected by Hourman, who was curious to meet an "ancestor." Unfortunately, Amazo was able to absorb a portion of Hourman's infinite temporal powers, and eventually numerous variant Amazos bedeviled Hourman's life, especially the incarnations nicknamed "Timazo," "Humazo," and "Hourmazo." Amazo became obsessed with proving himself the superior android, as he had been daunted by his nanotechnological descendant's level of advancement. When last seen, this version of Amazo had awakened after being forcibly patched into Hourman's Timeship. The enemies went into the timestream to battle.
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Amazo
Overview
Personality and attributes
Though an android, Amazo was said to be an intelligent being and one that had a violent hatred of the Justice League. (Justice League of America v1 #112)
Originally, Amazo considered himself the most powerful creature in the universe who served his creator and assisted him in the conquest of the planet. (The Brave and the Bold v1 #30)
Powers and abilities
As an android, Amazo was an artificial being created by his maker to be capable of superhuman feats. He was made with the power to copy the superpowers of other individuals and replicate their feats. (The Brave and the Bold v1 #30)
All Amazos have the combined powers of the Justice League as they stood when he was originally created- the powers of the Flash, Black Canary, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), the Martian Manhunter, and Aquaman.
The second and more common Amazo added the powers of Elongated Man, and even displayed (on occasion) such odd absorbed powers as Batman's intellect and Zatanna's spellcasting. The most powerful Amazo added the powers of Plastic Man, Black Lightning, and Firestorm, among many others. The incarnation that battled Hourman ("Timazo") was possessed of the original's powers, as well as nearly infinite control over time.
Before the Crisis, his powers included those of Superman and Wonder Woman. (All Amazos since have had their powers anyway in recent times, so we can assume he's been exposed to them.)
Notes
- Amazo was created by Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky where he made his first appearance in The Brave and the Bold v1 #30 (June, 1960).
Alternate Versions
- A future version of Amazo, from an Earth conquered by Darkseid, was actually a heroic member of the era's Justice League.
- Apparently a variant of "Timazo" battled the Legion of Super-Heroes at some point, as he possessed some members' powers and physical characteristics.
- In The Nail, this version lacked the powers of Superman and was a pawn of the Eradicator's plans to conquer Earth, and was defeated by the second Flash. It was later revealed that Amazo was built by Desaad, who planned to use it as his new body- instead, it was sent back in time by a boom tube, and was uncovered by Professor Ivo in an archaeological dig. Green Arrow's brain was transferred from his damaged body into Amazo's, and he sacrificed himself to stop the Limbo-Cell from destroying reality.
